Controversial Big House expansion

The game tomorrow between Ohio State and Michigan for the Big Ten title could be the last in Michigan Stadium's current configuration. Construction is to begin next week on 83 luxury boxes and a broader renovation. The $226 million project, which was approved despite considerable opposition, will rise above grandstands that have been mostly bleacher benches since the 1927 opening. The luxury boxes are the contentious heart of the project, but they are not the only point of disagreement involving the evolution of a 107,501-seat stadium known as The Big House, the nation's largest college football edifice.

Go Blue!

November 16, 2007  08:24 AM ET

Its too bad. Real fans don't sit in boxes.

November 16, 2007  08:38 AM ET

It doesn't matter what they do to the stadium, until we the fans decide to make some noise there will be no real home field advantage for the Blue.

Please keep Lloyd Carr as your coach.

Love,
The OSU Fans

Please keep Illinois on OSU's schedule.

More interested in accommodating millionaires? Than what? Putting in 10 times more spots for disabled people than they have requests for tickets for? What a shocker!

The ADA needs to get a clue. The numbers don't add up. They don't even regularly fill the 88 spots for disabled "fans" as it is. You want 1,000 now? Christ it's already quiet enough in the biggest library in the country thanks to all of the old farts clogging up the stadium's main sections.

I can't wait for the project to be completed. I think it's going to look great and I will be the first in line to get into the new club seats (not the luxury box seats). Sure it will be a change. I've been at the same seats forever. Change is good folks. Who doesn't want wider seats? More bathrooms? More concessions areas? Additional concourse and walkway space? And a new pressbox? Oh, and... more REVENUE!

Yeah those things suck.

I bet the same idiots making all this noise are going to be the ones that run to their cars this Saturday when we play Ohio State and it starts snowing and raining. Heaven forbid you get a little wet at a football game. GO AWAY FAIR WEATHER FANS. STAY AT HOME AND WATCH THE BIG TEN NETWORK. Oh... and... keep writing those checks! : )

OSU struggling to come up with a witty comment? No way...

I think its funny how many OSU fans have nothing better to do but to envy their neighbors up north. Why else would you be reading this story?

I would never read a story about the worthless horseshoe.

And by the end of the weekend that will only be able to be signed App State, Wisconsin (sort of) and Oregon.

Have fun in the chump bowl. I have my tickets to Pasadena.

If Hart and Henne play that is...

It's okay to be scared vinny. BRING IT! And bring that stupid smiling mascot up with you, too.

Isn't it funny that they can make a $226M renovation, and REAL fans will pay for it in the form of increased ticket prices, while never seeing a game from one of those boxes.

November 16, 2007  11:01 AM ET

I keep hitting the H on accident the correct spelling, Bim you are correct is witty...

November 16, 2007  11:09 AM ET

This is a shame. College football stadiums shouldn't have suites.

November 16, 2007  11:10 AM ET

Dear OSU and Michigan fans,

Stop your arguing. OSU, you played a weak schedule. Michigan, you lost to a D-1AA school. Just play the game.

November 16, 2007  11:22 AM ET

As a Michigan fan I have to agree, we are not very good this season, BUT we have already won 8 games and may win 10.
That's what happens when we are playing like crap. Look at the records of other power houses that are playing like crap
Miami
Nebraska
Florida State
California
etc.

Ad a fan of Michigan I am all for trying tp preserve tradition, but as anyone who has ever been to the Big House will tell you, it's the quietest 107, 000 stadium in the country. Not a big fan of luxury boxes, but I have seen some of the peliminary designs and it looks nice!
