Westbrook's contract will be problem

The Eagles' star player doesn't like his contract. This week he bumped right up against the moment when he could make it a big story, but Brian Westbrook side-stepped the question like it was a Redskins linebacker. It's hard to argue a man is underpaid when he's walking around with a $25 million contract. But he's probably outperformed the deal. Westbrook is eighth in the league in rushing, ninth in receptions (second among running backs) and second in total yards. Most of the other guys on the list -- and some well below Westbrook -- make more money. Since the Eagles are in the middle of the season and trying to focus on winning, he's declining to open up that can of worms. But this is absolutely going to be a problem down the road.

Can he stay healthy? How much does he make when you factor in the number of games he actually plays in? He is a real talent though, but as a lot of teams have found out, good RBs are cheap.

i dont see a real need to give him an "extreme" contract because the eagles arent even dedicated to running the ball and havent been in yrs. true enough he does alot of things out of the backfield but they can get that from elsewhere

Good running backs are everywhere ... if im the eagles i let him look for a job somewhere else before i cough pu big bucks for a RB.

love the image..looks like theres some kung fu football going on..

I don't care if you 'outperformed' the deal; you signed the contract nonetheless. Do the teams get to recoup money if you underperform? The answer is NO. You both agree on a payment that is not too little or too much based on both of your expectations. Wait until the contract is up and re-evaluate it then.

I think the media makes it out to be more than it is. Westbrook is a professional and doesn't show any contract unhappiness on the field or in media. Given the average shelf life of an NFL running back of 4 1/2 years, he was rewarded 2 years ago with a 5 yr 25 million contract. Until he finishes at least more than half of that contract, I see no reason for the Eagles to revisit that contract as well as him not making a stink about it.

After all, we all know what happened to Shaun Alexander.

Signed that 8 year 62 million dollar contract , and now weighed down by money

That Washington game would have made for an excellent segue for Westbrook to go into a "woe is me, I am underpaid" rant. The fact that he did not is a testament to his character. Members of the media ask questions to bait players into making controversial statements. Smart players don't fall for it.

And the boy can punt, too.

November 16, 2007  09:54 AM ET

This is not going to be an issue. The eagles will not pay him and he will be let go. This is how it works in the NFL. Players have no pull so he can forget playing in philly pas this year. The eagles have been known to pay players less.

McNabb, Westbrook, Kearse, LJ Smith. Fellas, the window of opportunity has officially been shut.

Say thank you TO.

RB's are the gum of the NFL. Very sweet at the beginning and they lose flavor very fast... and there's too many of them.

If he doesn't like his contract and starts whining because $25 millions are not good enough, trade him for a piece of candy and turn the page.

November 16, 2007  10:26 AM ET

The RB position is the easiest to fill in today's NFL. Peter King just wrote an article outlining the league's most productive backs, and many of them weren't even drafted. If I am the Eagles, I take some of that bread and spend it on a legit # 1 receiver next year, then plug in a back who is durable and will be productive. Westbrook is a very talented guy, but his whining has become tiresome. Let him go.

November 16, 2007  10:38 AM ET

PAY THE MAN!!!! Westbrook is one of the best in the league and is a truely nice guy to go with it. PAY HIM!!!

November 16, 2007  10:42 AM ET

I can't believe how many of you really think that Westbrook will be let go and that his 'type' of RB is easy to come by. The fact that every team he faces has to retool there defense around him because he is such a special back capable of ruining the defense in so many ways says something about his play making ability. He'll be back next year, his contract doesn't need retooling. He's just pissed b/c the Eagles overpaid him $3 million dollars and expect him to pay it back. Imagine that!

November 16, 2007  10:53 AM ET

JustCallMeDaddy why do you say thank you TO? If I'm not mistaken I believe they where in the Super Bowl with TO. The reason the team did not make it the following year is because everyone got hurt. Now I know TO caused the team pain but Philly had no players. Please don't tell me it was TO's fault that the players got hurt....

Brian Westbrook is the Eagles. It's about time they show him the money.

BrSee,

I'm a Cowboy fan(happy at present) and few things in life give me greater pleasure than seeing the Eagles at the bottom of the pit as their fans suffer to the point of donning Tom Brady jerseys.

Underpaid??? You got to be kidding.....He has gone over a 1,000 yds once in a six year career,,,,,,,,Give us all a break..stats are 2002-193yds, 2003-613 yds. 2004 -812 yds. 2005- 617yds , 2006 - 1,217 yds......

app. 2400 yds receiving his first five years, ave a little under 500 yds a year.
