08:17 AM ET 04.01 | While it's unlikely to affect his contract, Albert Pujols didn't get the start to 2011 he wanted. In his first appearance in St. Louis since he and the Cardinals could not reach agreement on an extension for life, [Pujols] had one of his least productive games as a pro and spoke about it like someone who knows he'll have at least 80 more chances at home to improve upon it. "Just a bad game, man," Pujols said after going hitless in the Cardinals' 5-3 extra-inning loss to San Diego. "Am I going to (beat) myself up? Just a bad game. That's the way it goes. It's baseball." Pujols grounded into three double plays, something he had not done in 1,558 previous major-league games, and he went zero-for-five with a game-high five runners left on base. ... Not once in his 10 previous opening days did he go without reaching base until Thursday.

He had better get use to it. The love fest he's enjoyed with the Cardinal fans is over. He will be under a ton of scrutiny all year long. Will be interesting to see how he responds.

Is there honestly a thread about this already? Can we at least get a week into the season before this talk starts?

Well what do you want for 300 million, results? And Theriot's defense is already paying immediate dividends.

Don't get me started on that.......I'd play Tyler Greene as SS everyday just to avoid Theriot's defense

Did the sky fall and I didnt hear about it?

Obviously it's one game, but to have his worst ever game, on opening day, with a big contract on the line? Apparently the pressure is getting to him already. There is no other explanation. "That's baseball" doesn't cover an epic fail like this.

And it's just started. He'll be ready for the rubber room, or a trade, by the middle of May

Hard to believe everybody around him in the order had multi-hit games and Albert took an o-fer

At this rate - 486 dp's for the year - may not get $200+ million.

With Holiday now sidelined with the appendectomy, doesn't it file like the baseball gods have decided to toy with the Cardinals a little bit this year.
