Why Duncan won't start All-Star Game

The NBA All-Star Game is still a good three months away, but one thing is already a near lock-cinch certainty: Tim Duncan's string of consecutive starts in the midseason classic will likely end at nine. When the NBA released its All-Star ballot earlier this week, Duncan was listed at center instead of power forward. That distinction is significant. It means he will be competing for votes against Houston's Yao Ming, whose ability to carry China perennially renders him the Western Conference's top vote-getter.

What is the justification for moving his position? He plays PF and always has. Something is screwy there.

I did notice the move this morning when I voted. Wow, that sucks for him and Amare Stoudemire. Neither of them will outvote Yao. I'm not sure why they moved Duncan, because he's actually a power forward, but either way, sucks for him. Someone was some explaining to do.

It's called politics.

The whole foreign vote is B.S. because the Chinese will vote for Yao no matter how bad he plays. This All-Star crap means nothing anyways.... I hate Duncan and the Spurs, but I admit that Duncan is a million times the player that Yao can ever be.

November 16, 2007  11:25 AM ET

I think the Fan vote in general is ridiculous. It seems that every all-star game there are players starting that do not deserve the nod.

November 16, 2007  11:25 AM ET

They deserve to be at the game, but not starting.

November 16, 2007  12:05 PM ET

I hear Joey Crawford did the roster this year.

November 16, 2007  12:35 PM ET

OrangeFuu, it's the same for Pau Gasol and LaMarcus Alderidge, who both are no real centers either. Duncan will make it to the All Star Team no matter how, Amare too. But for the other players there won't be any space left... Therefore we're going to see some Forwards make there first all-star appearence.

Does anyone care if he plays or not. I think the West would be just fine without him. No disrespet to Duncan the Fundamentalist but the West will still be ok.

November 16, 2007  02:17 PM ET

Dunc IS a Power-Forward in name only. He's a Center, and a VERY good one at that. Let's stop frontin' on this issue. The Spurs are just using the 2-center system that at least goes back to the Twin Towers days of Olajuwon & Sampson. So what if he loses the vote to Yao, the Big Fundamental IS still the man out West. And I'm a Laker fan, so U KNOW I've got respect for excellence, and Duncan personifies it.

Who cares if Tim Duncan even plays in the All Star Game?!! No reason for Duncan to get hurt in a meaningless game. Want to make sure he helps the Spurs win the Championship this season!!

November 16, 2007  02:29 PM ET

yes... tough luck on duncan being put in center instead of pf... but let's admit it guys, Yao is playing better than duncan right now. i'd go on record as to say that as of right now, in the regular season, he's the best big man in the league... at least the best true big man.

November 16, 2007  02:39 PM ET

does it really matter?...by now duncan is bored with winning titles. the all-star game is most likely a chore to him

November 16, 2007  03:28 PM ET

Duncan is my vote for Center or Power Forward. Like they say "It don't mean a thing unless you get the ring" 4 Championship rings that is.
Spurs are THE class orginization of the NBA and is starts with their unselfish superstar Duncan.

Put the two against each other in a meaningful match -right now- and Duncan will take him to school and eat his lunch too. The Spurs and Duncan usually start slow and not play good ball till after the all-star break.

November 16, 2007  05:22 PM ET

Who cares? The older players don't really care as much as the youngsters. I bet deep down the ALL STARS would much rather have the days off in the middle of the season.

If you have watched the ALL STAR games, it looks like a shoot around. No one plays defense or the score would be in the 80s or 90s instead of 120 - 130. When the ball goes up, all the guards are racing down court ready to jack-it up instead of helping out to rebound.

Im tired of you guys dissing the all star game So listen up "The all star game is only fun if you actually go to the game"!!!!! It sucks on TV because thats more of a presention for a casual fan or a curious observer!!!! Its just a big commercial!!!!! The All Star game is only fun if you travel to the game and enjoy the whole weekend presented by the NBA!!!!

jakllagusdad,

Of course somethings funny!!! Its called the "international takeover" Our game is being stolen and we dont even know it!!!!

November 17, 2007  04:14 AM ET

Yea give me a f en break, the dudes like 7'1 he isnt a power forward. And i like how some of you ingrates think Duncan is leaps and bounds better then Yao. Yao has put up better number for allmost three years. Be it the Spure are leaps and bounds better then the no defense Rockets.

November 18, 2007  10:14 AM ET

too bad they're not gonnaplay one on one... we're never gonna prove who's better right now.

November 21, 2007  04:17 PM ET

BFD. Timmy has a ring for every finger on his hand except his thumb. Who cares about Howard Stern's popularity contest. Look for Yi Jian Lian to start also. The Chinese will stack the balloting; after all, that's what Communists do, don't they?
