Packers may let Williams go

The Packers haven't approached defensive tackle Corey Williams about a contract extension, and their glut of defensive tackles leaves open the possibility he'll be hitting the free-agent market in March after having an especially strong season. The Packers no doubt will want to keep Williams but also will have to look at their salary structure to decide whether to make what looks to be an increasingly big investment in Williams. They have Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly playing well as part of their defensive-tackle rotation, plus they will have first-round draft pick Justin Harrell ready for an increased role next year. The team also likes undrafted rookie Daniel Muir as a developmental defensive tackle.

cant pay all of them and 1 will have to go

November 17, 2007  08:47 AM ET

good...send him to san fran...they need all the help they can get

November 17, 2007  09:10 AM ET

They should save there money for a new QB because this will probably be Farve's last year at the helm and 2nd string Rogers just don't have it and never will.
I'm surprised they kept him this long, he was a Mike Sherman pick and we all know what an great (NOT) Coach / GM he was. And while there at it, they should dump there GM, Thompson.
I hope the new Packers head that there getting at the end of the year does just that.

Who cares about a team who is only solely around thanks to a salary cap...get rid of these losers...

November 17, 2007  09:59 AM ET

Yeah, get rid of the most storied franchise in the NFL...genius, Maddux. And let's allow Aaron Rodgers to play a game or two before we decry him as a bad pick.

November 17, 2007  10:22 AM ET

Big Mistake this man is a BEAST!!! I would slash payroll at other positions before i let him go!!!! This defensive line is the reason theyre winning!!!!

November 17, 2007  01:45 PM ET

MacaDamien .....I think you could be right. Quality D lineman are hard to find..not sure you can have too many of them.

November 17, 2007  03:15 PM ET

trade him for another back

November 17, 2007  05:36 PM ET

Poss0021:
Maybe you watched different games I watched when Rogers stepped in as QB and Rogers did absolutely nothing.
Maybe you should start watching basketball instead of football GENIUS, you seem to know it all.

Nice this guy stole my name now send him to the Giants to replace coffield...i would love to see a guy with the same name on my favorite team

November 17, 2007  07:42 PM ET

Most storied franchise? Come on. These guys aren't the Yankees/Celtics/UCLA Bruins of the NFL.

They might be top-5 in the NFL.. with the Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys and Bears all having something to say abotu being the most storied franchise in the NFL.

But with so many teams on the list- how can you call one franchise the most storied in the history of the NFL?

November 17, 2007  10:25 PM ET

Because, Rosenberg, a name means a lot in history. When you mention Lombardi, Starr, Lambeau, Gregg, White, Favre, you go back to the most storied franchise in the NFl and maybe all of sports. In a world of greedy owners, angry fans, and a whole mess of trouble, you have the Green Bay Packers sitting in the limelight of litte old Wisconsin. There is something...pure about the Packers. Have they had their share of scandal? I can say painkillers, I'll admit it. But I have never met anyone, even if they're not a Packers fan, who didn't enjoy a trip to Lambeau. Even if they're team lost and they were there as visiting fans, they were never treated better. All the teams you listed are great teams, and they have fantastic histories with lots of titles etc. Yet, how can you help but smile whenever you think about The Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field. :-)

November 17, 2007  11:12 PM ET

Sounds like Maddux is either a Bears fan or doesnt get ESPN classic.
either way... Two things are for certain. 1. Green Bay has a serious NFL history and 2. Maddux HATES the Pack.

November 18, 2007  02:58 AM ET

Green Bay and Buffalo are two pro teams with college atmospheres.

November 18, 2007  06:32 AM ET

Maybe Maddux is just plain MAD because DA-Bears and I emphasize on DA, Suck and just maybe he would really like to start routing for a winning team like the Green Bay Packers

November 18, 2007  08:42 AM ET

To Justin Rosenberg

The Green Bay Packers have 12 NFL Championships and are one of the oldest franchises around. How can you tell me that they are not the most storied franchise without backing it up.

November 18, 2007  12:52 PM ET

Go Pack! The biggest problem with sites like these are the morons who log on and run their mouths about football. Something they clearly know nothing about. More than likely, they're 12 years old. Time to get off the computer now junior, it's nap time!

November 19, 2007  11:54 AM ET

Williams needs to be locked up and the Packers may be waiting until the end of the season because they have already resigned Donald Lee and they sacrificed some salary cap this year for more next year. If Favre doesn't retire than Williams and this great defense help him win now and if Favre does retire then Williams helps the team win period, is fairly young, and Favre retiring frees up a LOT of cap room

November 19, 2007  12:26 PM ET

You can't just call Aaron Rodgers a bust yet, in the games where he has played which were usually relief duty or when Favre got hurt against New England last year, where they didnt open up the playbook for this guy. I don't know i can see this guy being a pretty good QB just give him a shot with the solid defense and good young recievers he won't have to try to do everything himself, but i see Favre playing at least one more year after this so i won't worry about this to much.

Tough one to call...I do like Corey Williams and think he does a pretty dang good job in there....but we have a 1st round pick sitting on his butt collecting a paycheck (still not sure why we picked him up as we had a great depth of D-line before the draft with the exception of John Jolly who wasn't on the team last year and is new to the Pack).

I'd like to see what Harrell can do and see if he was worth the 1st round pick but at the same time, Williams does have more experience and works well with Ryan Pickett.
