07:59 AM ET 04.05 | Six picks in the April draft, including the 22nd overall, may be enough for the Colts to select Andy Dalton. Vice president and general manager Chris Polian and coach Jim Caldwell put Dalton through a private workout Monday, according to ESPN.com. ... In the short term, the interest in Dalton would be in acquiring backup competition behind Peyton Manning. That position has been held the past two seasons by Curtis Painter, a 2009 sixth-round draft pick out of Purdue. On a grander scale, the Colts might be interested in beginning the grooming process of Dalton or another quarterback to be Manning's eventual successor. The NFL's only four-time MVP is 35 and entering his 14th season.

Manning will make us forget another old quarterback who played when he was past 40. The Colts need to groom a replacement, sure, because you never know when Peyton's mojo will run out, but I wouldn't be surprised if any quarterback they might draft this year will end up leaving at the end of his rookie contract without ever starting a meaningful game.

Mannings successor is currently trying to get up enough courage to ask some girl to the Junior Prom.

Agreed. The timing for the Colts is critical. Draft too soon and if the person is good, he will leave. Draft too late and he won't be ready if/when needed. The primary reason to draft a QB now is injury insurance on Manning, except Manning rarely, if ever, misses a game because of injury.

There are three threads this morning about drafting quaterbacks. By my count that is three more than there are QB's worthy of a first round pick.

The Colts aren't going to win anymore super bowls with Manning unless they make some other improvements on the team like RB, OL, DB.

They have too many needs on that team. I don't see how they can fix it all before Manning's ready to hang it up.
