Texas Tech sophomore forward Decensae White met Friday morning with coach Bob Knight and is no longer on the men's basketball team, according to White's father, David. David White said he and his son weren't happy with Decensae's playing time and how he was being used this season. White said he told his son to meet with Knight.

This happens all the time, even in middle school and high school. Can a player have a talk with a coach, ask questions like "what am I doing wrong: or "what will it take for me to get more playing time?" Then go out and make the improvements the coach requires of that athlete. Quitting a team because you didn't get the answer you wanted is so 2nd grade.

You are correct Red Zone. I was at Indiana when Knight first arrived, and I have followed Indiana and Knight for a long time. It happens all the time, everywhere. But, I'll bet you a quarter that there will be someone on here making some profound statement like . . . "Knight must go!" It's a shame the guy is a great coach.

November 17, 2007  09:32 AM ET

This is because kids are not taught to show respect or to own up to their actions anymore....just another example of a LONG LONG list of atheletes who think they are far better than they really are and will not buy into a team concept

November 17, 2007  09:34 AM ET

This ain't the way you deal with Bobby Knight. If you want more playing time you better hustle your **** off in practice and games, play defense and get results. Crying to him about playing time in his office is the worst thing you can do.

November 17, 2007  10:13 AM ET

Knight is one of the best coaches in college basketball history. This guy is a crying little b*tch. I would be glad if I was a Tech fan to not have him on the team.

November 17, 2007  10:28 AM ET

Knight is an old fool who the game has passed by!!1 He's tarnishing the little legacy he had left at Texas Tech!!!!! Knight gets outcoached in the tournament year after year and you guys got the nerve to defend this jacka**???? He's nothing more then a media clown!!!!!!

November 17, 2007  11:09 AM ET

(Harsh words from Macadamien!) Knight's coaching tactics remind me of Woody Hayes: browbeat and scare the players into playing well. That age is long past and Knight, who was a good coach in his time, is a dinosaur. This the age of coddled college athletes who want everything to come easily, not with work. They all grew up with Fred Rogers telling them they were the best just because of who they were, not because of what they did. Knight's marking time until, inevitably, he will be pink slipped.

November 17, 2007  11:27 AM ET

Coddling college age people and "telling them they are the best because of who they are, not because of what they did" is part of what's wrong with our country today.

November 17, 2007  01:55 PM ET

Hey, I'm just telling it like it is, not because I like it. (People not wanting to deal with the truth - or rather thinking their own private fantasies are real - is "what's wrong with our country today." )

November 17, 2007  06:56 PM ET

No player or parent or school should ever be surprised by any decision or action from Knight. His story is an open book. If you choose to play for him or have him as your coach, then you put yourself at his command, so no tears or complaining when things do not go as you had planned. Knight is the price you pay when you decide to jump in the arena.

November 17, 2007  10:38 PM ET

Bob Knight is a 'LEGEND' in his own right for many reasons. Any basketball player (college or pro), who thinks he can tell the "General" how to play the game or debate Knight on how much playing time he is or is not having is NOT living in reality. Hello! Hello! Earth to Houston...Houston, "I think we have a PROBLEM understanding Why is Knight is Lubbock, Tx?" Every kid who has ever played for Coach will tell you, it is His or the Highway! Remember, that is what generals do... they break the kids down, only to build the guys into men.

Now, Decensae White can't "man-up" and won't realize he has the skills that Bob Knight was looking for; that was a complement Decensae. You were playing for a legend, a hall of fame coach. Then, you made another stupid move and quit the program because you were told, "no" and maybe, "you are just sophmore...give yourself a chance to MATURE". Dumb! Dumb! Dumb! Fire your Dad as your manager and learn to think for yourself! Go Back! and see if Knight will take you back. This time grovel and learn to eat crow. This is a shake ur head moment...Dumb! Dumb! Dumb move!

guys why is everyone jumping all over this kid? maybe you all know something i don't but i didn't read anything that shed light on what was said in the meeting?

November 18, 2007  09:48 PM ET

They may be both wrong. I think Coach Knight can be a jackass and a bad example for kids. He may be a "legend" but for many of the wrong reasons.

And I've seen the "spoiled brat athletes" that get everything handed to them in high school.

This kid has to be one of the dumbest kids ever to not know that going into Coach K's office, whining about a lack of playing time wouldn't get him a broom handle up his buttocks.

November 19, 2007  10:46 AM ET

if he can't handle Knight's coaching technique, then maybe it was best that he leave the team......his situation would not have improved had he stayed anyway. his father even admitted that Knight is the reason he wanted his son to go to TX Tech.
to George W. Watson, i grew up watching Fred Rogers and he taught kids to respect people in general; he didn't teach them to be egotistical, self-serving brats who think the world owes them something just b/c they are a talented athlete.

November 19, 2007  08:42 PM ET

Bobby Knight is a great coach, yes I'll give him that even being a Carolina fan, but he is one of the worst people coaching college basketball. He is even worse that Uconn's Calhoun. Remember Knight at Indiana?? Throwing chairs, yelling at players and refs?? This guy is the opposite of a class act like Dean Smith (whose record was sadly overtaken by Knight last year). And just recently with Texas Tech, Knight was accused of grabbing a player around the neck?? Whats up with that why do we not hear about that with other coaches?? Because it doesnt happen and it just doesnt make bigger news bc Knights been there many times before. I support the player in this one. Knight is nuts

November 20, 2007  10:27 AM ET

Knight is just a fat ess bully...An okay coach, but coaching is more dimentional than what he has been exibiting over the last several years...he is not creative in dealing with today's youth...this aint 1976...Joe Pa, Dean Smith now those are coaches...Pete Carrol is another good one...gotta change with the times..

November 20, 2007  07:53 PM ET

I'm no Bobby Knight fan by any stretch of the imagination, but if this kid is discussing his playing time with his father, this isn't the kind of guy with the mental toughness to play college basketball.

November 21, 2007  09:29 AM ET

I agree...coddling our youth like that is part of what is wrong with America today. Heck, just yesterday I learned that all Simon Mall Santa Claus's are now forbidden to say ho ho ho. Apparantly, that saying is offensive to all the ho's out there...

November 21, 2007  03:06 PM ET

whaaaa whaaaaa cry baby players need to listen to the greatest coach of all time, they might improve

November 22, 2007  09:10 PM ET

Anyone remember the 1979 Pan American games? After getting a technical foul and being ejected from the game, coach Bob punched a Puerto Rican police officer. Coach Bob left the country and a warrant for his arrest was put out. Since he couldn't be extradited and he wasn't going back on his own accord the warrant turned out to be useless. After Puerto Rico recalled the warrant sometime in the late 80's Coach Bob made this quote in Sports Illustrated.

"F*** 'em, f*** 'em all.??? The only thing they know how to do is grow bananas." - Bob Knight, said of the Puerto Ricans
