Tortorella blasts critics of hard-nosed game

08:34 AM ET 04.06 | John Tortorella's crew is willing to pay the price of sacrificing bodies to win games. It doesn't get much more expensive than this and it doesn't get much more devastating than this. The Rangers will first attempt to clinch a playoff spot and then attempt to do damage in the playoffs without Ryan Callahan, who will be sidelined indefinitely with the broken right leg he sustained at the Garden on Monday night blocking a Zdeno Chara shot with 1:45 to go and his team protecting a one-goal lead in what became an emotional 5-3 victory over the Bruins. ... Tortorella launched a pre-emptive broadside yesterday against those who would question the Rangers' style. "I don't want to hear any [stuff] around here about are we blocking shots the wrong way, or is somebody hitting Henrik too hard -- yes, I'm going there -- or this, that and the other thing."

Hey Gabby and Drury....earn your frikkin paycheck now.

There's a fine line between "hard nose" and "stupid." What's Callahan doing blocking Chara shots? Shot blocking should be left to the lesser (and more useless) lights like Averyhole ... and preferably, let him do it with his face.

April 6, 2011  09:24 AM ET

In the actual article, it showed how most of the top teams don't really block shots, and most of the worst teams are near the league lead in block shots. Kind of interesting. I don't know what it really means, but was interesting none the less.

It's funny how in every broadcast the announcers can't say enough good things about the guys who block shots and how it helps the team. So, who is criticizing them? Yea, it sucks to lose Callahan but injuries happen.

Agreed, but Callahan turned and exposed a lightly padded part of his leg. Needs a little work on his technique.

This is it right here. There is more to blocking shots than just getting in front of them. Just ask Lappy.

It means that all the good players are too valuable to their teams to be blocking Chara shots.

While I admire Callahan for doing it, what's he trying to do? Earn the "Ditty Harry" title?

No argument there, but he took one for the team and it shows how the Rangers have come together as a team. This hurts for sure, but the Rangers could be the East's dark horse this year.

If he wouldn't have been injured, folks would be praising him for having the balls to block that shot. Injuries sustained while showing heart that most players don't have can galvanize a team. When Lappy took that last puck to the face, the Flyers closed ranks. Granted he wasn't really an offensive force out there, but just sayin...

Obviously a Hab fan should recognize the importance of shot blocking. You gotta pay the price and sometimes the puck smarts when it hits you. Still gotta pay the price, especially in crtitcal and playoff games.

That's going to be a tough row to h o e with one of the better offensive players missing on an already offensively challenged team.

Callahan may be one of the Rangers better offensive players, but with 23-25 for 48 points (-7) totals in 60 games he is hardly an offensive force.

I guessin that if he was writing Crosby's check he'd feel a little differtnly.

Callahan didn't need any more praise. Everybody knows what he means to the Rags. We all know the kid has balls.

Again, I admire him for doing it but, if I'm Torts, I'd rather have him in the line up and have somebody else take credit for this kind of heroics.

He so valuable becasue he does a whole lot more than score goals for the Rags. Scoring ability is indeed a bonus.

i know i was comparing him to Lappy. I personally don't have a problem with guys getting in front of shots whether they are 50 point guys 10 point guys or 100 point guys.

Hab fans are used to watching their players fall to the ice...not to block shots, but to draw penalties.

Like what? He's a -7 on the 4th least scored upon team in the NHL. Almost half of his goals are of the powerplay variety which is fine, but that leaves him with only 13 five on five goals.

I'm not bashing Callahan, he's a good little 2nd line forward, but let's not get the hype ramped up too much. He will be sorely missed by the Rangers more because of their offensive ineptitude than because of his prowess.
