Madden's gritty career may already be over

08:28 AM ET 04.07 | Because of injury, John Madden, whose hockey life has taken him from a hardscrabble childhood to the Stanley Cup, may not have a proper close to his career. Madden told the Star Tribune in late March that, given how his family had fallen in love with Minnesota, his career options going forward were to either re-sign with the Wild or retire. Madden is almost 38 and still feels he can play hockey, but there is no guarantee the Wild will want him back. And that means, unless his foot heals enough to play in the regular-season finale on Sunday at Xcel Energy Center, he might have already played his last NHL game. "Yes, unfortunately, yes," Madden said. "I am pretty bummed that I might have played in my last game." ... "This is not the way I wanted to go out," Madden said. "Not playing a few minutes in a game and being hit in the foot and being out of action. It's still weighing on my mind."

First story of the end.

About a player thinking of retiring and not named Sundin or Forsberg.

I hear there might be an opening in NJ...

He was always one of my favorites. After Stevens retired I always thought he was going to be the next captain. One of the truly best defensive forwards (and true defensive forwards, not good defensive forward who puts up a ton of points so he is a Selke candidate every year).
Remember Lou and the scouting department found him while they were scouting Brendan Morrison. 3 cups, 1 Selke (should have been at least 3) later and he has had a very good career.

It's always a shame when somebody with a good career is unable to leave on his own terms. May he have good luck for the rest of his life wherever it takes him.

The interns are positioning themselves for the dull days of summer. Just think how scintillating a "Madden Comeback" thread will be in July!

Indeed. And the Foote story count hasn't remotely reached the numbers we got for Sundin and Forsberg.

I would have loved to go out on my own terms too. But the boss called me into his office and said that I was being furloughed after 33 years. I retired and I'm having a ball, but that still stings a little.
