08:09 AM ET 04.08 | Phil Jackson seemed entirely at ease on Thursday with a conversation turning to this being his last NBA season. Jackson, 65, is definitely not coming back to the Lakers. One particular quote made it hard to imagine him ever coaching again in the NBA. He has always hated the traveling, the uncomfortable beds in unfamiliar hotels, the bad food at late hours, the weather changes. All of it. "It's a really unhealthy lifestyle," he said. "I think that's a good reason to get out of the game in some ways too." He recounted with great sincerity how hard it was to return this season, period. "I thought I was going to retire last July," he said, remembering a conversation with Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak. "I told Mitch, 'I don't think I'm going to come back. You better plan on something besides this.'"

QUOTE(#3):

Phil ain't walking away if he wins again, just as he didn't walk away after last years winDo not underestimate his ego, he does not want someone else winning with his players, as it'll bring out all the phil haters who say 'anyone can win with the best players'I dont believe that, hes an all time great, but there are plenty of those guys out there

You're right regarding his ego...

... as for his coaching.

His record will place him among the greats.

My personal view, he's good at managing big egos and getting those egos to believe in a form of teamwork.

Not quite sure of how he is able to pull it off.

I do not view him as the best "x's and o's" guy.

QUOTE(#1):

I'm not surprise if he comes back next year. He might be the 1st $20 million coach for a year...

What's his current salary?

He's not as great as his record suggests by any means. The guy has been handed winning teams all his career. Maybe not any coach could win with the teams he's been handed... but most could.

X ans o s in the nba is not important, its a players league.managing the egos and getting everyone on the same page is most importantPhil is spectacular at that

I agree with that JGB... like Doc he is a great "manager". As far as being a good "coach" we'll never really know since his major job is keeping the lunatics and divas happy and being sure they get to the bus on time.

I love to see what he could do if he took a perennial 25 - 57 sort of team and actually had to coach.

QUOTE(#9):

$10 mil a year. And the best x and o guys don't make the best coach also. Phil has to manage the biggest egos around. No other coach could manage those egos. Da Toni couldn't coach the lakers.

How much skill does it take to make sure they leave their guns home, take their Prozac and Ritalin and make it to practice and the games?

OK... getting them to practice can be tough. But he's a Zen master... He can do mind melds and other Star Trek/Super Yoga stuff. He can just WILL them to victory!

At least the hare-brained space cadets that live in LA seem to believe that.

He's proven that part...

.... in two high profile situatoins.

And good morning good people!! It's a beautiful spring day in Beantown.

It's Friday... it's payday and the Red Sux, the self proclaimed "best team in baseball", are 0-6 to start the season.

It's beautiful day in the neighborhood!

I don't agree with "no other coach could manage those egos".

You'd be surprised at what some coaches can handle when required.

Bill Fitch, Chuck Daly, Pat Riley, Red Holzman, etc. had to manage various egos during portions of their coaching careers... with great success.

But, Jackson has shown himself capable of getting those teams to focus on winning, even with personal differences amongst the players and himself.

I hate the Red Sux with a passion that only insane seriel killers can match.

The minute one losing season ends in Boston all the media does is fawn over those clowns and wank off at the thought of next year. The media, and not just Boston's, have been claiming they will be something special this year.

0-6 is special... just not the kind of special they were thinking.

The worse they do the happier I am.

The alure of another 3peat overcame him. The Zen master channeled his innerself!

I'm surprised at that response, Ep...

... aren't you a supporter of New England teams...?

April 8, 2011  09:43 AM ET

Quit while you're on top, Bro.

Football and basketball are the sports I enjoy. The Celtics and the Pats are my favorites

But I think baseball is a game.. not a sport and anyone with two wheels on a chair can be a star. It's about as useless a pastime as there is.

Baseball sucks and the Red Sux suck the most
