Goodell repairing NFL's image

In the stern wake of Roger Goodell comes a "Monday Night Football" game between the Broncos and Tennessee Titans. Goodell, as NFL commissioner, will not strap on pads or a helmet, but his iron fist has already delivered a serious blow to one team, while the other team fears another. Goodell is only in his 15th month as commissioner, yet his short tenure has been defined by the harsh manner in which he has dealt with those whose actions have splattered mud over the NFL's image.

Good for him and the league! Baseball could take a few lessons.

Yeah he's cleaning up the image, but he's also continuing the trend of taking the "fun" out of the game. Every year you see new rules put into place to penalize players or coaches from showing any emotion. They want them to be emotionless robots, and perfect P.R. guys who are humble and put the game above themselves. They need an ex-player to run this league, and I wouldn't mind making Brett Farve the commissioner for life, than this over-priveleged son of a senator. Farve exemplifies what the game is about. Having fun, and enjoying your job.

You might want to start looking a little harder at some of the owners Commissioner Goodell if you really are concerned.....

November 18, 2007  09:55 AM ET

goodell has moments of being stern. he has yet to have regular moments of being equitable though. his harshest penalties seem reserved for players and tending towards players not the same hue as himself.

until he uses the same iron fist on owners, coaches, and all players equally, goodell's punishments are at best, spotty. at worst specifically inconsistent.

Agreed El Pollo Loco. You can't continue to take the fun and excitement out of the game, and you can't deny that Favre is a poster child for tasteful fun on the field. I say we start up a petition.

...anybody else think that Goodell's pic looks like he just crapped his pants on national television???

November 18, 2007  10:48 AM ET

He's doing all right I guess.

November 18, 2007  11:04 AM ET

I agree with El Pollo Loco. Favre would be good, anybody who isn't a freaking lawyer would be good.

Well, the Pacmans, Chris Henrys, and Vicks of the league pretty much forced him to be the "law and order" commish.

Player conduct was getting out-of-hand and the smarter players in the league were quietly demanding that something be done to stop the off-field indiscrections.

When a white player F's up in a big way then I'm sure that he'll "drop the hammer" on them, too. Hate to be that blunt, but let's stop dancing around it and just say what we mean. Granted, I think that the Patriots got off a little light.

The NFL is the top sports league in the US. A few knuckleheads were threatening to screw it up. Once everybody gets the message, then we'll see where Goodell can take the league.

I love what he's done with MNF. With your host, Steve Buscemi......Musical Guest Bon Jovi. When did watching MNF become The View??

He also busted the Patriots for cheating during football games.

It's about time.

Whoever said the game should be about fun obviously hasn't been paying attention for the last...oh, 10+ years? It's not about fun, it's about money.

And when the paychecks start to get affected by the bad behavior, maybe that will change.

November 18, 2007  12:13 PM ET

I agree the Pacmans, Chris Henrys, Vicks and Belichicks of the league forced him to.

November 18, 2007  06:50 PM ET

I don't get why people lump Belichick's in-game rule bending (yes it was way wrong) with the felonious extracurricular activities of the Jones', Henry's, and Vick's of the league. Breaking the rules of a GAME, and breaking the LAWS of a city, state, etc... are NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Good luck, Roger Goodell! You've got you work cut out for you! (DC)

Too bad he failed to deal with the patriots staff properly. He's obviously following this ideal only so long as it is in his own interest.

The only major mistake that I think he has made thus far involves the Patriots and the breaking of a rule. Because of the way his office handled the tapes that the Pats turned over, he created the myth that the Pats had illegal footage that helped them win games in the past.....Super Bowls, perhaps? As a Pats fan, he didn't do us any favors by destroying the tapes. Had there been evidence that supported this "conspiracy theory", the league should have released it & dealt with it. Since there was no evidence of that, he should have been more vocal with the press. His handling of this matter has led to widespread "rumors" that the Pats stole championships in the past! These are just "fairy tales" created by biased writers who have agendas. For all of those "out there" believing these crazy stories that are flying all over the net, all I can say to you is just wait for the movie/book to come out. (and then we'll know the truth!). Because if there is a "smoking gun", it doesn't stay hidden for ever. But guess what,,,,,there is no "smoking gun". The Pats broke a rule & were punished for it. End of story!

That picture looks like he's auditioning for American Idol.

My only hope is that his example will filter all the way down through the high school ranks. Like it or not, these highly compensated athletes serve as an example to our youth. I know because I coach a youth league team.
It may be reaching a bit but the point could even be made that these men even owe it to the game itself. How hard can it be to avoid drug charges, domestic violence, D U I, cheating charges, etc. etc.
We must always remember, character is learned on the field. It is the athletes duty to take these lessons with them and apply it to life.
