Why Grossman will start for Bears

One play against the Raiders ultimately convinced the Bears' coaching staff that Rex Grossman was ready to reclaim his starting quarterback job for Sunday's game against the Seahawks. But it might not be the one you think. Right before Grossman's highlight-reel, 59-yard touchdown bomb to Bernard Berrian, the Bears faced second-and-10 from their own 30. Grossman came to the line looking to isolate Berrian down the sideline in man coverage, but the Raiders' safely switched to zone, taking away the deep ball. Instead of forcing it anyway in the hope that something good would happen -- a bad habit that was a factor in Grossman getting benched in September -- he checked down to his secondary receiver and settled for a dump-off to Benson, which picked up 11 yards and a first down.

their season is over, doesnt matter who starts..

November 18, 2007  09:51 AM ET

Hmmm....decide to switch back to your starting qb after an 11 yard gain....why not just admit that there was no reason to believe that taking Rex out would make a difference?? Love the bears man, but it's hard to watch em this year.

November 18, 2007  10:36 AM ET

would be nice to give Orton a shot, we already know what rex and greise can do. Or more to the fact what they cant do. Put hester in the backfield and a running back, at least he knows where the end zone is.

November 18, 2007  10:43 AM ET

He will start because someone has to or the center has to have someone to hand it to. Simple as that..

November 18, 2007  10:46 AM ET

That made no sense, sorry...point is, Someone has to be the QB. None are qualified to start in an NFL game, and Grossman is as least qualified as anybody,,,sooo, why not him?..Does it really matter?

November 18, 2007  11:23 AM ET

Come on guys...do you know football? You are telling me that a man who has played 8 games with over a 100 QB rating and one 98.6 QB rating in 1 1/2 years is not good enough to play in the NFL. For some reason, everybody is ready to write this kid off when he has less than 2 years of actual game experience in the NFL. Just ridiculous. Why don't you take a look at Peyton Manning's and Brett Favre's stats their first two years and then fairly evaluate Rex.

November 18, 2007  11:42 AM ET

One play does not a starter make. He wasn't that great at Florida, and it wasn't Rex that got them to the promised land last year. IMO they got there in spite of him.

I do agree that their season is pretty much over...they're just playing it out now for draft picks and respect.

So go out there and win, Rex. Just gives my Vikings higher draft placement. (I'm under no illusion that they're going to pull anything out this season either)

November 18, 2007  11:51 AM ET

If they are going to start Grossman, they need to stick with him. No team is going to win if they switch QB's every 6 weeks.

November 18, 2007  12:57 PM ET

It's inconsequential at this point what the Bears do this season: they're out of it in any meaningful sense. All they're playing for is respectability.
That said, Seattle wins this game no matter who plays QB. Wonder who shows up this game: Rex or Wretched?

November 18, 2007  12:59 PM ET

Rex Grossman will start today on the road against the Seahawks.Rex Grossman,in my opinion is as mediocre as the Bears itself. The clock is ticking on Rex,who was repaced a few weeks ago by anothe incumbent QB named Brian Greise. They will probably stick with Rex the rest of the season but it's likely they will become just another superbowl loser who doesn't make the playoffs the following season.
projected season record: 7-9
My pick for Chitown@Hawks: Seahawks over Bears 30-24

November 18, 2007  01:09 PM ET

maybe we forget that we already know what orton can do and it's nothing. yeah? he looked good in training camp? so did brian griese and rex grossman, so that tells you nothing.

November 18, 2007  02:11 PM ET

I thought it was because it made Cedric Benson happy. = ]

November 18, 2007  05:39 PM ET

He probably would have problems starting his car after losing todays game. BEARS SUCK

November 18, 2007  05:51 PM ET

DLand ...
It isn't just a lot of people on here who say Grossman is not good enough, it is his own coaches. Obviously Lovie is not thrilled about him or he would not have yanked him early in th e year. They did not go to Griese because they wanted to, they tried him because they lost all faith in Grossman. He will NOT be the Bears QB next year, and will be a back up someplace next year.

November 18, 2007  07:32 PM ET

Dwade03 you came frighteningly close, 'hawks 30 - Bears 23!

November 18, 2007  08:21 PM ET

They be done for this season. Da Bears will give Grossman a couple of games to see if he can overcome adversity and play some football for them in the future. After that, I think they will play Kyle Orton to see what he's got for next year. (DC)

November 18, 2007  09:04 PM ET

WOW...THE GUY MAKE ONE GOOD READ IN HIS CAREER AND HE GETS HIS JOB BACK...HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING THAT SINCE LAST YEAR!

November 18, 2007  09:27 PM ET

I understand the QB question, but I thought this team was supposed to have some defense. That is what everyone thought they were built around.

November 18, 2007  11:52 PM ET

DLand,

Ahhh yes ... a Bears homer (as opposed to a Bears fan with a brain in his head) speaks!

I don't care about how great Grossman was (vs some of the worst defenses in the league) when he didn't totally suck. I care that he totally sucked as many times as he did to begin with ... and as badly as he did - especially when it REALLY mattered (Super Bowl).

Anybody who has a down-side as bad as him ... a 23.6, 10.2, 1.3 (vs one of the worst pass defense in the league in the Vikings at the time) and ZERO QB rating, plus FIVE games (and counting) where he can't handle the center snap ... is NOT good enough to START in the NFL.

Tell ya what, wherever Rex is traded to next year, please just move there with him and offer him your full support!
