Weight: Officiating bias against Isles exists

08:23 AM ET 04.11 | Just as eye-opening as his experiment on the Islanders bench was injured captain Doug Weight's take on what he saw. With a firsthand glimpse of what the coaches deal with on a nightly basis, Weight said he was very upset with the officiating. "We know it's not a crooked league, but the point is there is a bias," said the 40-year-old veteran, who was limited to 18 games this season because of a back injury. Weight believes the Islanders' relative inexperience and spot in the standings were factors in the unfair treatment. "It was pretty evident that the games in [the officials'] minds weren't important to us," said Weight, who spent four games behind the bench.

And ... it took Doug Weight this long to figure it out? The problem has gotten a lot worse since the introduction of the two ref system.

April 11, 2011  09:08 AM ET

yes, there is bias ...plus the fact the Isles were involved in several goon-fests didn't help their reputation, either.

and don't get me started on Colon Campbell's "fair disipline", or the video review for goals...

good thing he wasn't behind The Rangers' bench...his head would have burst. But funny how he says, "we know it's not a crooked league" and go on to describe how they're cheating his team.

I always hate to agree with player opinions on the refs.. but it's gotten pretty blatant. After watching that kick in and this weekend's games....like Conklin said..."it's pretty obvious SOMEONE wants the hawks in the playoffs". AND...like it or not there are teams that the refs hammer .. Philly is at the top ..... Rangers and Flames constantly get penalties called that are borderline.

Tomas Holmstom could tell you a thing or two about ref bias.

As Old Tom would say. What do you expect from the Nat Ho League.

Every fan thinks their team gets it from the refs. Bottom line is the refs don't show bias, they just are bad

I don't know about that. Someone told the refs that they would prefer to have the Hawks in the playoffs. Refs inject themselves into games all the time, affecting their outcome. Quite often they set out to manage certain games instead of refereeing them.

BTW, I agree with the "they're just bad" part.

really? Have you seen some of the calls against The Avery?
like him or not, the game shoul;d still be called fairly and it isn't. Same thing used to happen to Ulf and Clause Lemieux. And don't give me any..he makde his bed rubbish...fair is fair

That's ok. The Wings got away with a nice high elbow to the jaw of Seabrook. Kind of evened out in that game.

I agree with several posts. The refs are just plain bad. The League is inconsistent in their instructions about enforcement. Teams with a rep for goon play really get it, whether they have done something at that specific time or not. Plus, I've been familiar with some really bad teams in DC over the years. When you're bad, the officiating helps you stay that way for a time. No close calls in important games ever go your way. Hockey is a tough game to officiate well. It's so fast and everything is bang-bang. But, some of these guys would be pet rocks if they weren't officials.

As Schoenfeld would say......"Have another donut you fat pig (s)"

He does get calls on the reputation...but in all fairness he knows that it goes with the territory in front of the net. The only problem I have with that is when the goalie comes out of the blue to make the play and actually runs into the guy in front...not just Homer but anyone...and still gets the interference call..

Every fan doesn't think that...I think I'm pretty objective on it...a bad call is a bad call no matter what team it's on. I'm just saying the refs have gotten pretty blatant in the way they call for some teams. I'm not a Philly or a Rangers fan...but they get a lot of crap calls.

True. Blame it on Karma. But, that well disguissed, furtive elbow wasn't as readily visible as the high stick. We know it happened because of the many slow motion replays from every angle. Didn't need replays for the high stick.

BTW. DON'T let The Colon get wind of it! I see a 4 game suspession on the horizon if he finds out!

Beware of the wrath of The Colon!

April 11, 2011  11:01 AM ET

I really hope the NHL does not become like the NBA where all of the games seem rigged to get the big market teams in the playoffs. Bettman was an NBA guy for a while and it seems like the game is getting a little sketchy. They have to replace colin campbell especially now that his son is in the league. His emails regarding Savard were incredible in the fact that nothing happened

Yeah, they're bad, but you really don't think the Wings and Penguins get favorable treatment? I wonder if there are stats kept about how many power plays are given to those two teams in the last 5 minutes of play, especially when they're down a goal...??
