The top QB on the free agent market

08:04 AM ET 04.12 | Whenever a free agency period does kick in, who will be considered the top free agent on the quarterback market? Matt Hasselbeck shapes up as the top UFA under center. Following the 2010 season, the 12-year veteran looked like a lock to be re-signed by the Seahawks after coming alive in the playoffs with a 7-1 TD-interception ratio and arguably his best performance ever in Seattle's stunning wild-card upset of the defending Super Bowl champion Saints. Recently, though, the pendulum seems to have shifted, with Hasselbeck now expected to at least test the free-agent waters. Teams like the division-rival 49ers and Cardinals could be viewing Hasselbeck as the perfect "bridge" starter who, in the best-case scenario, could reinvent himself the way Kurt Warner did in his twilight years in Arizona.

Yes, I'm sure teams will be lining up. Yawn.

When the top FA QB is in his mid to late 30's, this is a weak FA class for QBs.

Another "bridge" to nowhere.

Minnesota, Miami, Arizona.....The list goes on.

What an honor the be on thetop of that list

He's 35. Yeah, he got his team to the playoffs, but with a LOSING RECORD. And this is the best free agent on the market? Well, when the competition is Kevin Kolb, maybe he is.

I'd take him over Kolb. At least he's done something in the NFL.

I do not think that anyone should even think about taking that has-been.

If the 49ers signed Hasselbeck, I would make them the favorite to win that sorry division. He is the best short term answer out there for QB.
And he does not cost you draft picks like Kolb , who will become a contract problem in a year anyways.

Hassel-been?

The trouble is, there are a LOT of teams who are really without a starter right now. The draft is not spectacular, and I don't think any of those guys is going to be ready to start in September. If Palmer retires and Philly decides they need Kolb for insurance, an awful lot of teams are going to be throwing their clipboard-holders under center and praying for a miracle.

a contract would be the least of your problem with Kolb.

I'm picking the Rams to take the NFC West this year, regardless of where Hasselbunny ends up. They're not ready for superstardom yet, but the Niners are pretty dysfunctional, Arizona is a joke and the Seahawks are an over-the-hill gang without any magic.

Agreed. They are set at qb for a good while.

Careful. Remember, you're only one drunken evening in a bar from needing a quarterback yourself.
