Vintage, unapologetic Burke slams critics

08:35 AM ET 04.13 | Brian Burke isn't big on public apologies. Burke was willing to admit the season was a failure. But he sure wasn't saying sorry. This was no Glen Grunwald-style apology to the Leaf Nation. Let's just say there was no hint of diplomacy in the air, no delicate attempt to sugarcoat, well, anything. Asked why he was standing by head coach Ron Wilson despite a "consensus" among Leaf fans that Wilson needs to go, Burke responded: "We don't run this team by consensus. I don't give a rat's [tail] about what the consensus is." Of those who disagree, he said: "They're confusing me with someone who cares about their opinion."

<yawn> ... and why do we care about anything that comes out of his mouth, other than comedic relief?

the playoffs are starting and the T&R interns are trolling for this crap?

April 13, 2011  08:42 AM ET

"We don't run this team by consensus."

Well, running it as a dictatorship hasn't worked either Brian, especially with you in the role of the dictator.

And many among those who don't agree with you help pay for your salary, as they'll remind you one of these days.

What a charming gent!

April 13, 2011  09:05 AM ET

At least he is a good read. And a GM should never listen to the fans opinions, because every fan has a different one. Keep spinning those wheels BB.

Well Brian gets a break because of the way Reimer came in at the end. Dont confuse this with a team making great strides.
On a second note T&R shall i have my 13 year old join and help you with the spammers seeing as you have no clue or just dont care?

The old bluff and bluster over brains tactic....shocking Brian..shocking

"Of those who disagree, he said: "They're confusing me with someone who cares about their opinion.""

Nice! Are there any Leafs fans left with some gonads to let him hear it for those comments? Or, are they so beaten down into submission that they'll just take it like sheep? I know this Averhole would be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail if he made those comments in most NHL cities. But, this is Toronto. Addicted to mediocrity.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't know of anywhere else a GM in any sport could say that and still have a job the next morning.

His key quote, "When you miss the playoffs your season is a failure."

They obliviously don't care, Buc.

They don't care, they have no clue, they're incompetent, stupid, rude and have no talent of any kind in any category. In other words they're competent to help Brian, but not adults. By the way, I just listed all their good points.

An adequate warning, Canuck. Too bad the clip didn't run longer, Burkie sounded about ready to map out the route for the Cup parade next year.

Oh, my! He took time to give special praise Phaneuf and Kessel as examples of great Leafs performers!

Sorry, Leafs fans but ... you are doomed!

April 13, 2011  10:17 AM ET

Wow does he have some contempt for the leafs fan base or what?
I was watching Cherry rip into the laffs the other night it was pretty interesting.

April 13, 2011  10:28 AM ET

Why is Keith Acton still an assistant coach with the Leafs? This is a question which never gets asked.
He has been there since 2001 and has been under 3 head coachs Quinn, Maurice and Wilson. Does he have an in with the Teachers Pension Fund which ownes 60% of MLSE?

I'm actually on his side here. And I like the blunt-ness of it too.

I've ranted about this before, but it can't be easy listening to assinine question after assinine question at these press conferences. Or questions that are asked on a daily/weekly basis. He deserves to get upset about it. The media - especially the hockey media in Toronto - are pathetic and unimaginative. Its a re-tread of the same questions over and over again, and I would lose my mind too.

On keeping Wilson: why fire someone for the sake of firing him? The team is still a bunch of no-heart, little talents, so why pay 2 coaches to not make the playoffs when you can get away with just paying one? Wilson dug his own grave for next season yesterday when he stated the Leafs are only a piece or 2 away from being Cup contenders. Paul Maurice said that once too.
