08:21 AM ET 04.14 | Where did Aroldis Chapman's heater go? It was Ramon Hernandez who called the trainer and pitching coach out to check on Chapman. "Yesterday, he threw what 93, 94," Hernandez said. "Then today, he's throwing 91. He's throws almost 100 over every pitch. Now, he can't get up to 93. There's got to be something. You can't lose it in one day." Bryan Price and Paul Lessard came out after Chapman walked Jason Bartlett in the eighth. He said he was OK and stayed in the game. "He's young kid," Hernandez said. "My guess is he wants to battle through it. Like anybody who's a player will do. You got some pain you won't say nothing. You're trying to tough it out." The Reds took out Chapman after he retired the next batter.

Loss of control generally means elbow. Loss of power? Shoulder issues. Sigh... The human body just wasn't meant to throw such a light object so fast. It's like revving a sports car in the driveway while in idle.

Morning Hoos. I saw him picth a few games at the end of last season and batters were hitting his 100 mph pitches. Throwing heat just isn't enough. Not sure why the fastball isn't there right now, could be injuries and it could just be mechanics that will work themselves out.

The coaching staff and medical people associated with the Reds need to protect this young guy from himself.
You want to keep him from going out there and damaging himself by playing through the wrong kind of pain.

He continues to throw 100mph and he'll blow his arm out. As long as he is effective, who cares how fast he throws.

If he buys that bb gun, he'll shoot his eye out too.

QUOTE(#13):

Disagree - Nolan Ryan was still throwing high 90's when he was in his late 30's. Did almost his whole career. It's more about fitness than anything else. While I do agree that throwing overhand is not a "natural" human motion - with the right fitness - it can be tolerated. The question is really going to be that he might of been just "off". It may be something physical (structurally with an area of the body) - it may not. It could be a very slight mechanical problem with the delivery - they'll break down the film I am sure. So for now - just check him out head to toe. It's too early to tell yet.

I was in high school in Dallas in the Nolan Ryan years. I saw the guy pitch quite a lot. And, man, did he bring it at age 43-46. His last pitch of the night in that 7th no-hitter was 97 miles an hour. You can throw hard and have a long career for sure.

And, for anyone that cares, Ryan threw harder than Chapman in his youth. Ryan was clocked at 100.9 on the slow gun (IE as the ball crosses the plate). Chapman was clocked at 105 on the fast gun (as the ball leaves the hand). There's about a 5 or 6% difference between the slow and fast gun readings. Ryan was easily throwing 106-107 that night he was clocked. And, his arm held up just fine.

Of course, Ryan was a freak of nature. :)

Just ask Robin Ventura if Ryan could still bring it in his 40's.
