On DL, Mauer to be checked by specialist

08:18 AM ET 04.15 | After a game in which both Joe Nathan and Matt Capps failed to close out a win, the talk was understandably about a catcher. Twins catcher Joe Mauer has bilateral leg weakness and will fly to Baltimore on Friday to see a specialist, another blow -- a big one -- to a club that was already reeling after a 4-3 loss in 10 innings to Tampa Bay on Thursday. He has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and will be replaced by catcher Steve Holm, who has been called up from Class AAA Rochester. ... Mauer will see the same specialist who treated his inflamed right sacroiliac joint in 2009 that caused him to miss the first month of the season. After going to Johns Hopkins to see the specialist, Mauer returned after a month to win the AL batting title and Most Valuable Player Award.

It's tough seeing players of his caliber hurt, hopefully he'll come back at full strength.

Trade you Geovanny Soto straight up for him!

Good morning all. Considering how much they are obligated to pay him, I think they need to move him to a less demanding position.

At what point did the entire Twins team get turned into glass?

April 15, 2011  10:27 AM ET

It's getting to be an every year thing with Mauer. They have to get him out from behind the plate, as good as he is, you need to preserve his health to enjoy the benefit of his talent.

Move him to third and Valencia to short. Or put him at first and trade morneau for a decent starting pitcher

Morneau, Mauer, Liriano, Blackburn, Nathan- they have all had ugly bouts over the last 2 years all things considered. What was there before though was decient back-ups to step up. That hasnt happened yet. And for once it may not. Which will be good for every other freaking team in the Central...

Valencia has no range. He's good for 3rd base.

He has about the same range hardy had, and has the cannon to make throws from deep in the hole. Woudn't be ideal but hell we got Cuddy playin 2b. Would be nice to still have wilson ramos... wouldn't lose much if you did move joe.

when a player get that rash of injury's and if the surgeons doesn't perform accurate surgery most likely that player would have very hard time to heal properly, that's why most of the players have to think very long period of time before they really agree to been cut in pieces, because the sideeffects are not a joke its your health your ability to be able to move freely without any type of disconffort, and lets just not forget anything that has to do with surgery have to do with inffections, sideeffects, and soo many uknown problems!!!

They had better make sure he hasn't caught guillan barre. Bilateral weakness with recent flu like symptoms are classic symptoms. Hopefully it's just something simple and he will be back on the field soon.
