Dolphins conflicted over Mallett?

09:35 AM ET 04.16 | I don't know the answer and the only people who know -- general manager Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano -- are promising to tell me on or about April 29. But I wouldn't be surprised if they are now still unsure about the enigmatic Arkansas quarterback. That's because Ryan Mallett represents a serious decision. He is inarguably the finest, most polished passer in the coming draft. That is 100 percent certain. If that were the only consideration, Mallet would be the answer for any team with quarterback questions. Mallet has rare ability. The ball jumps off his hand and flies accurately. Mallett is just too talented to ignore and could be the most explosive offensive player the Dolphins have considered since Dan Marino. But Mallett might also be explosive in that he comes to the Dolphins as a potential bomb of a pick -- a gangly, slow-footed kid with a big arm but also a big possibility for being the next Ryan Leaf. So which is he? The Dolphins have a dozen days to decide.

Speaking of entitled athletes with entitled attitudes to match, here we have another example.

Stop worrying about foot speed at the QB position.

No reason to tale a chance on a potential problem. The best qbs in the league don't have 'big arms' they're just smarter than everybody else and are natural LEADERS

Chad Pennington representing the exceptions.

IMO, I don't think Mallett will go until the second round!!

Isn't it interesting that Mallet has a flabby stomach? I've never seen a "top" QB at the combine that is so out of shape and that should scare the Dolphins more than anything else.

I've never really seen any article that would lead me to believe this is a Ryan Leaf in the making. Most of the things he's accused of can be traced back to the first few months he was at Arkansas. He came in at 265 and was a bit aloof, but most of the same players who said negative things about him went on to rave about his work ethic and leadership later. His arrest was just a typical matter of a kid being a kid, and he must have learned from it because he hasn't been a police blotter mainstay. You've probably watched him play, so you know he dominated in an NFL-style offense, his passing skills are off the chart, and his decisions are sound. His TD/INT ratio over the past two seasons was 3.26. If he's really grown up now he could be the most successful QB of the bunch. Just make sure you've got a deep line before you draft him, or your team will lead the league in sacks against and another potential star could be ruined.

Mallett will be ok. All of these prognosticators don't mean a hill of beans. Those same ones didn't give Brady much of a shot, either.

I don't know...that scouting report sounds a lot like what they were saying about Chad Henne. The upside may be too promising to pass up if he's still on the board when the Fins pick. Could also be a pick and trade prospect.

Exactly! Not a prerequisite for greatness at that position.

Well, that all depends on how good your offensive line is.

It'a always interesting to see how good these rating services are by looking back a few years. Here are the top QB's for the 2007 draft as rated by WarRoomReport:

1. JaMarcus Russell - LSU
2. Brady Quinn - Notre Dame
3. Drew Stanton - Michigan State
4. Trent Edwards - Stanford
5. Kevin Kolb - Houston
6. Troy Smith - Ohio State
7. Jordan Palmer - UTEP
8. John Beck - BYU
9. Jeff Rowe - Nevada
10. Matt Gutierrez - Idaho State

He's the best on available so if he's there they better take him.

April 16, 2011  12:49 PM ET

For being slow-footed he did well against SEC speed... LOL

this is just one of those years (like 2007) where some will be busts, some will be mediocre and the rest clipboard magnets. this is a year to pass on most of these QB's being mentioned at the top of the draft. time will tell, but this is not a Bradford type year or a Ryan/Falco type year etc., they are just not there. you cannot make hamburger into a filet.
