08:23 AM ET 04.17 | The 49ers have kicked the tires on just about every draft-eligible quarterback the past two months, all the while knowing the quarterback they really want is the one they've had all along. The team has a standing offer to former No. 1 overall draft pick Alex Smith waiting on the table for the current lockout to end, according to a league source who confirmed a Sacramento Bee report this week.

A maybe the same OC for more than a season at a time.
Smith might not be their answer at QB, but his coaching staff has been in flux for most of his time with the Niners. But still... at some point, natural ability has to rise above everything else, and he himself has been lacking in consistency in that department.

Hes not their top choice but bc of the lockout situation he might be the best option if they don't want to start a rookie. But it wont happen because even if they are offering a contract he's a free went and can sign win anyone he wants. Why would he want to go back to the niners? They've been as bad for him, as he has for them. They both need to move on and smith will go somewhere that he can be the starter for a few years, not the niners where he would only start for 1 season before getting replaced by a draft pick and dealing with the same problem he's had for 6 years- another new coach, oc, and system.
