Wilson adds pitch to arsenal

08:17 AM ET 04.18 | Dave Righetti called it a "big-time" development. Brian Wilson's final pitch in Wednesday night's save against the Dodgers must have had Jamey Carroll shaking his head and all the scouts at AT&T Park going, "Whaaaa?" It was a two-seam, sinking fastball that Wilson just added to a menu that largely consists of a straight, four-seam fastball, cutter and slider. If he can use it effectively, hitters will be in for even tougher at-bats against last year's major league saves leader. ... Pitchers always mess with new stuff. Every day, Righetti watches Wilson on the side try out curveballs, screwballs, knucklers and anything else one can do to propel a baseball. With the two-seamer, Wilson is borrowing from Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who added it a few years ago to complement his bread-and-butter cutter.

It will be interesting to see how consistant he is with the new pitch, if hitters adjust it will soon be forgotten.

This guy is a character. He better pitch outstanding with all that funny stuff of his. I would think he is the best young closer in the league now and with his physical fitness conditioning, he will be for awhile... Unfortunately, I really believe the lime lights of the NY and Yankee will draw away from the Bay after Mariano.
