Why Vick went to jail early

Hoping to convince a judge that his contrition is real, Michael Vick checked himself into jail on Monday - three weeks before he is to be sentenced for his infamous dogfighting operation. The suspended Falcons quarterback turned himself into the U.S. Marshal's Service in Richmond, even though his sentencing in federal court is scheduled for Dec. 10. By turning himself in earlier than necessary, Vick hopes U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson will take notice and not sentence him too harshly, lawyers who have followed the case said Monday.

Who?

November 20, 2007  06:56 AM ET

Not a bad move, may garner some empathy with the judge! I think I'd have waited until after having Thanksgiving dinner with the family though!

November 20, 2007  07:19 AM ET

theres a rumor he failed a drug test too

November 20, 2007  07:29 AM ET

"Failed" as in...."2nd" drug test pw?

November 20, 2007  07:51 AM ET

his lawyer will probably ask the judge to consider 'credit for time served' during the actual sentencing hearing......the rumor about another failed drug test doesn't surprise me at all.

He will be a an inmate with privaliges for sure........he wanted to get settled for Bowl season

November 20, 2007  08:01 AM ET

It does me ATLfan7, I would think he wouldn't be THAT stupid given the current precarious state of his situation!

November 20, 2007  08:16 AM ET

cowboystar, stupidity and arrogance are a dangerous combo and these traits don't disappear just b/c the individual gets arrested; Vick strikes me as the type who LIKES to flaunt blatant abuse of the rules....even if it will further complicate his situation.

Too late for real contrition Vick. You do the right thing only after the fact which impresses no one.

November 20, 2007  08:35 AM ET

Hmm, going in early, let's see if he asks the judge to stay longer, because we all know how much it means to Vick to have the respect of low lifes. Maybe his brother will commit some crime so they can bunk together, it will be just like old times. Or maybe he wanted to go in early because he saw that horrible Sandler remake, the Longest Yard, and didn't want to miss the start of the prison league.

November 20, 2007  08:42 AM ET

Maybe he just wanted to get there early and claim the bottom bunk before Barry Bonds joins him.....A smart move when you think of it..

November 20, 2007  08:51 AM ET

Time off for good behavior? LOL

November 20, 2007  08:55 AM ET

Why did Vick go to jail early? I'm betting it's because he missed his family and friends.

November 20, 2007  09:20 AM ET

What the hell are you talking about? So when you do something wrong your not suppose to try to repent, and change your life? I've said it before sometimes it takes harsher penalties for some people to finally "get it", but we wont' know if he does until we see the rest of his life from this point on. But how long are you going to hate the man. A woman shot her husband in the back with a shotgun and she got time 5 months time served and might get her kids back and you don't even hear about that. Haters will hate . . .hell that's what you do . . . . .but in my opinion he is no worse then the dude who cheats on his wife, or the white collor criminal who steals from pensions and leaves people with nothing . . . .

Can someone really go to prison without a sentence? That doesn't seem right.
