08:02 AM ET 04.21 | Trent Baalke's pre-draft media luncheon featured a great deal of talk about quarterbacks. NFL general managers are purposely vague on the eve of the draft, but Baalke left no doubt Wednesday when it came to one controversial topic. He wants to see quarterback Alex Smith in a 49ers uniform this season. "Coach [Jim Harbaugh] is very comfortable with him," Baalke said. "I'm very comfortable with him. Will Alex choose to come back here? You're going to have to get him on the phone to ask him that question. But he's certainly a guy that we'd like to throw into the mix." As The Bee first reported last week, Smith has a standing, one-year contract offer from the 49ers to return to the team once the league's lockout ends. Harbaugh has been effusive in his praise of Smith, and Baalke followed suit during Wednesday's pre-draft luncheon with the media.

Couldn't let a week go by without that wonderful picture of Mr. Sunshine, could we?

This is like leaving spoiled milk and the fridge and expecting it to be good tomorrow.

Niners also love mediocrity it would appear.

If Harbaugh can get to the playoffs with Alex Smith, then he would be my pick for coach of the year. If not, he's just another fool for trying.

QUOTE(#7):

I feel bad for Alex....one week he is not in there plans and the next week he is loved by them.

Then you should feel even worse about JaMarcus - one week he's not in the Raiders' plans, and the next week he's not in anybody's plans.

What's the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Sorry, Jim, that dog won't hunt. Move on.

what the H...seems like a 49ers & Smith thing posted here every other day..C'MON DRAFT!....7 days 9+ hours

I can't help to think they are "talking him up" to hopefully increase his value and then try to get something for him in a trade (I'm not sure what that would be). I realize the other NFL teams are not that gullible, but I just don't see why they would keep him.

Yeah, but then what? Normally, we'd expect stories of rookie holdouts, but this year they can't even negotiate with the draftees until we get a new CBA. So we'll get listings from the Cincinnati real estate section, police blotter stories from everywhere, the Pittsburgh Wedding Registry and probably more tidbits from Hattiesburg.

How many years on average does it take a starting QB to find success? 4?5?...6?..7..even 8 in Carson Palmers case (in which he is still searching for it). They have to go back to ground zero Again with a new coach and coaching philosophy with the same QB?? FAIL.

They cant trade him, he is a free agent. He has made it known he doesnt want to return to the Niners, so even if they offer him a contract I doubt he would accept. He will get offers some where else and accept those.

You got it.

Niners "love" Alex Smith huh? we'll see...if they truly do that will be their downfall!

It's time for both he and the Niners to turn the page and move on.

Sounds like Harbaugh is mimicking his bosses. The York family picked Smith over Cal Grad (and 49er faithful) Aaron Rodgers and they're determined to prove they were right (despite all evidence to the contrary).

And Smith hasnt signed on dotted line, hes (snicker snicker) it is only a one year deal, my guess is hes hoping some other team will offer him a better deal or contract...

Mike Nolan took Smith in the draft because he didn't believe that Aaron Rodgers attitude could co-exist with him.
Six years later, they're BOTH out of a job.
Sort of says it all.
