08:18 AM ET 04.21 | With surgery likely to sideline him more significantly, Joel Zumaya has opted for six more weeks of rehabilitation. If the rehab doesn't work, Zumaya will have surgery to determine the source of the pain in his elbow, which he had surgically repaired after it was broken last year. These conclusions were reached in a conference call Zumaya had Wednesday with team medical officials and Dr. James Andrews, who recently examined him. "If they did a surgical procedure, then the timetable isn't favorable for him to pitch again in 2011," said head athletic trainer Kevin Rand, who participated in the call. Zumaya will begin the rehab immediately. "At the end of that, he'll play catch, and we'll see where he is," Rand said. "If it's not favorable, he'll undergo surgery."

If Dr. Andrews recommends it, then it shall be done...but given Zumaya's injury history I think surgery may be in his future

He's probably just better off shutting it down now then putting it off for later.

Do what surgery? Right now there's no diagnosis to treat. If it ain't broke, you don't turn a patient over to a surgeon to fix. That's bad medicine, and bad news for the patient.
Zume needs tincture of time. He's recovering from a broken elbow, fercryinoutloud. It'll take time.

Sorry to say, but I think he's done. If he doesn't make it back this year, the Tigers would be nuts to spend more money in resigning this guy, to go through it all again next year.

I think they're nuts for giving him $1.4m this year. This is the same douchehat that missed time durning the playoffs because he hurt his hand playing Guitar Hero. I'd have released him on the spot.
