Secret behind Sox improve rotation? Anger

08:15 AM ET 04.25 | Why has the Red Sox staff turned things around? It's because they're pitching like they're ticked off. And they are. This starting staff was 2-7 with a 6.71 ERA over the first 12 games and maligned all over Red Sox Nation. They all felt the heat and read and heard the words. They now have gone 7-1 with a 0.88 ERA over their last nine starts. John Lackey admitted Sunday he was angry when his turn was skipped after the April 13 rainout vs. Tampa Bay. Manager Terry Francona said it wasn't because Lackey was struggling, rather it was because he needed to get the staff lined up properly. But one normally doesn't skip a $17 million a year starter.

Anger, fear, whatever works.

Baseball is full of streaks...

... the starters will have a period of one or two weeks of being shellacked, and, the criticisms will start again.

Beckett is the one that needs to be good this year. Dice K is the wildcard.

Lackey just needs to be average.

The expectation for Lester and Buccholz is top 2 in the rotation.

It'll play itself out.

Wow, that's all it take to turn things around? I bet every team will start telling their pitchers to pitch angry now.

How about giving Curt Young a little bit of credit? The clowns at the globe were sure ready to throw him under the bus earlier.

The last few weeks have certainly been better for the Sox starters. I don't expect them to be that good all year, but it can't hurt their confidence that's for sure.

all they needed was to vist my Angels. oh woe is me.

As a college coach I knew once said, We aren't as good as people make us out to be today, and we weren't as bad as people made us out to be back then. Truer words were never spoken. One must be careful not to believe the hype - even and especially that which comes from within.

You are 100% correct...

... could not be more right if you tried.

The highest level of truth that I've seen on fannation.

Anger, attitude, bitterness? They have been doing this for a while

April 25, 2011  12:21 PM ET

The first 2 weeks they should have skipped all the starters. That was a glorified BP pitching group. They needed to get pissed off.

Pre 2003. Absolutely not today - unless you're holding on to an old paradigm for whatever rational or irrational reasons.

A great way to understand just how much thinking has changed is to read Bill "Spaceman" Lee's book "The Little Red (Sox) Book." It's a tongue-in-cheek mental exercise (partially) written by one of the great contrarian's of the game. I was about a third of the way through it before I began to realizee that his thinking was anachronistic. It made me go back and check the copyright. Yep... 2003. Knowing to look for that (because much of his morose point of view was anachronistic) is pretty strong evidence of a fairly major paradigm shift in thinking.

They needed to get their assses kicked for being subpar. Thank you, Texas!
