Bears low-ball Martz, risk his departure

08:00 AM ET 04.26 | Perhaps the Bears didn't quite think this one through. A source told the Sun-Times that offensive coordinator Mike Martz, like special teams coordinator Dave Toub before him, recently turned down a one-year extension offer because it didn't include a raise. With the draft coming up Thursday and the Bears selecting in the first round, the team ought to be reminded it leveraged its future to get quarterback Jay Cutler. Anything that makes Cutler work is a good thing, be it adding a fresh new offensive lineman or two or locking up the play-caller who helped Cutler achieve his first winning season and first playoff victory. ... What happens if Martz, who turns 60 in May, decides he doesn't need the $1 million he is scheduled to make in 2011?

When those decisions are based on the dollar and not the value of the commodity, rarely are the best decisions made.

What does it mean to the Chicago Bears if Martz leaves?
It means bears are gonna suck!
I hope smarter heads prevail, Cutler is a good man, but he needs tools,

are the Bears the Bengals of the NFC regarding being cheap?

Not quite. They do throw the $$$ occasionally, but Jerry Angelo tends to gravitate toward the Blue Light Specials in the FA period. He did make some nice acquisitions a year ago, but I think that had more to do with securing his job than anything else. It would be nice if more of his draft picks amounted to something while they were still in Chicago.

And where would Martz go, exactly? It's not like teams were beating Martz' door down trying to hire him...
