Fans disgusted in Minnesota

08:03 AM ET 04.29 | Not all fans in Minnesota were happy with the Vikings' selection, and some of them reportedly directed catcalls at Rick Spielman as he took the stage at the team's draft party. No doubt fueled by a few cocktails, some of these folks got the opportunity to direct their disgust at the Vikings brass. A few minutes earlier they had chanted for the Vikings to draft Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara. Also available with the Vikings on the clock were Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley; North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn; and California defensive end Cameron Jordan. And yet when Minnesota turned in its draft card it carried the name of Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder. This was a guy projected as a third- or fourth-round pick a few months back when the well-respected Pro Football Weekly draft guide came out.

Of course. They're the Vikings!

April 29, 2011  08:06 AM ET

Well it's gotta be better than the F word, doesn't it?

April 29, 2011  08:06 AM ET

Thanks Spielman... I get to laugh at your team some more.

April 29, 2011  08:13 AM ET

It's just a little insurance in case they don't get McNabb. :)

April 29, 2011  08:25 AM ET

And the qb mess continues. will we hear the dreaded "F" word eventually? stay tuned.

Ponder is a solid QB and they addressed their most pressing need.

They obviously don't think TJack is the answer.

Have you ever watched T.Jack play?????? "Sucks," is a word used to describe his good play!

I've been saying all along that there are too many teams looking for quarterbacks, and the price will be high. In this case, 4 teams decided to use their first-round picks for guys who don't really have "success" written all over them.

But what's Minnesota to do? Their defense is already at least serviceable, but they will certainly be at the bottom of their division with the signal-callers they had on the roster as of yesterday morning. Yeah, they're going to be at the bottom anyway, but it won't be as bad if Ponder turns out to be even a middle-of-the-road guy who can just not cough up the ball between handoffs to Peterson.

With the first pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the Vikings select...

If this comment is meant to be serious, you're missing the point. The point is he wasn't worth the 12th overall pick, when they have other needs and there are better players for those needs. Ponder most likely would have been available in the 2nd round, and they probably would have been able to trade up to get him.

Minnesota and Tennessee were the only teams than panicked, and Jacksonville was the benefactor.

April 29, 2011  08:49 AM ET

I don't fault the pick, but you have to believe they could have traded down and still taken him. I would hope they at least tried.
Or taken some one else at 12 and traded back up at the end of the round to get him.

April 29, 2011  08:54 AM ET

I pondered over that pick as well.

April 29, 2011  08:58 AM ET

With the way Detroit is building up their pass rush, the last thing I would want to be is a rookie QB in the NFC North.

Well my friend, Minnesota thought he was worth the 12th pick. What you thought they should have done dosen't matter.

April 29, 2011  08:59 AM ET

They needed a quarterback, and so did a lot of other teams. Did he go too high? Probably. But would he have been around for them on Friday? I doubt it. We'll have to wait and see if he will end up being the best QB that was available to them, but I think Minnesota had to do what they did.

April 29, 2011  09:00 AM ET

Now, is he going to buy a ranch and call it the Ponderosa?

April 29, 2011  09:11 AM ET

Give the kid a chance, you needed a QB, you got one ( first round value..????) At least he's not F#####

There ya go. If you believe in a guy then you go get him.
If he turns out to be the second coming the same people will show up at Walmart with his jersey on.
