Sooners may have another first-rounder in Jones

08:23 AM ET 05.02 | This past August, Barry Switzer, while watching an Oklahoma practice with Bob Stoops, had a flattering assessment of Landry Jones. "He's sitting there for about a half-hour and says, 'Bob, this guy is going to be a first-round draft pick,'" Stoops recalled Fiesta Bowl week. "He, you know, evaluates talent pretty well." ... Before long, Switzer could be proven right. Considering how high Washington's Jake Locker (eighth overall), Missouri's Blaine Gabbert (10th) and Florida State's Christian Ponder (12th) went over the weekend in the NFL draft, Jones certainly has the chance in 2013 -- or 2012 -- to join Sam Bradford as Sooner quarterbacks drafted in the first round. After all, despite being two years younger, Jones outplayed Locker, Gabbert and Ponder last season, while leading the Sooners to a 12-2 record.

Of course he's a 1st rounder. Outside of 8-10 teams QB play in the NFL is absolutely lackluster. That's how 2nd and 3rd rounders like Newton and Locker get selected in the 1st round.

Colonel, IMHO he's going to have to improve a lot to move ahead of Luck...but anything is possible.

Luck and Barkley, in that order. Jones a distant 3rd.

Plus, who knows, ESPN could fall in love with another one-year-wonder and next year's draft buzz could include a name we aren't considering here.

Anyone could see he was going to turn into a very good quarterback. It's not like Switzer was saying something a bunch of others were not seeing.

If Jones is a first round pick, its more a statement on the lack of QBs in the next draft and so many teams being STUPID and reaching for late round QBs in the first/second round (see Netwon, Locker, Kapernick). I live in OK and know several knowledgeable OU fans and they dont even count Jones among Top 10 QBs in the nation. He cant stand in the pocket during a decent pass rush and will be murdered behind a bad Oline at the pro level. His stats are so good because of the team around him and coaches that know how to use their team strengths to exploit the other teams weakeness.
