Blank: Falcons are not timid

08:04 AM ET 05.02 | The Falcons broke from conventional draft wisdom. They didn't pay any attention to the "don't mortgage your future" edict in trading up twice, and the "don't draft a punter if you can find one in free agency" rule. Also, they didn't get any help for their pass rush, tight end or nickel back. ... "This is a decision that was made by the organization. This is an organization that is not timid. This is an organization that is concerned about winning today. We are concerned about winning on a sustainable basis. This is an organization that works together with our coach and with our general manager, everybody in this building, to make the kind of thoughtful decisions that Thomas [Dimitroff] has made," said Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

That wasn't a timid trade. I'm not sure it was a smart one, either, but they did get their guy.

It was a lot to give up for a WR. They overpaid to help an offense that didn't seem to need much help. Trading away all those picks left them with work to do in free agency during a time when free agency itself is up in the air.

Agreed. They gave up way too much. Julio Jones is still living off the hype that he rode into college with.

If Jones is "as advertised", then they have a real weapon that stretches the field.

I can see most of their games being shootouts next year....if there is a season, of course!

A lot of things went right for them last year. The law of averages says " watch out." The Saints and Bucs are better now than they were last year too.

I believe that Julio Jones will be an outstanding football player. With that said, I don't know if I would be willing to give up 5 picks for Jerry Rice, even knowing how great he was.

Agreed... their defense largely overachieved last year by giving up a lot of yards but then redeeming themselves with very timely turnovers.

Deion Sanders is coming out of retirement to play DB for Arthur. And the Falcons are going to sign Herschel Walker...he'll beat the crap out of the other teams best player!

Their offense might be really good, but it was the defense that couldn't stop the Packers offense. Seems to me like they want to win games like the old school Chargers, 48-45.

The Falcons are tough and if Jones is as advertised he will help them. But at some point they have to shut down the opponent and they have mortgaged their ability to build the defense.
