08:13 AM ET 05.03 | A "pain-free" Jair Jurrjens, who kept things rolling Monday night, learned earlier in the day he'd have a personal catcher. Rather than work David Ross into starts here and there, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has decided to put him in a regular rotation catching Jurrjens. Brian McCann got his rest Monday night, like he will every fifth day, while Ross caught Jurrjens for the fourth consecutive time. Jurrjens was 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in three starts this year caught by Ross entering Monday. Gonzalez said Monday he wants to use Ross with Jurrjens like former Braves manager Bobby Cox used to use Eddie Perez as Greg Maddux's personal catcher.

I like when teams do this, especially when they have catchers who can hit like McCann. As long as the offense is able to get by without him, this seems like a very solid decision.

While he's no McCann, people tend to forget that Ross isn't too shabby as a hitter. It makes Gonzalez's decision a lot easier.

Ross has hit well when he has played this year, and with the way JJ is pitching I'd keep Ross back there too... solid move

It's easy if you try.

QUOTE(#8):

Surprised it's not used more in the AL with the DH to play with. Might save some of really good catchers for a couple more years.

Most teams only have 2 catchers and they aren't going to use the backup as the DH. If the catcher gets hurt and you slide the DH into that role your pitcher ends up hitting. Plus teams are afraid of ever needing their emergency catcher

however, Posada has been Dh'ing this year for the Yanks. Seems to work for them.

Besides being a Gator, David Ross is a darn good baseball player and could be a starter elsewhere.

Ross is the best backup catcher in baseball. I used to hate it when Henry Blanco or Paul Bako filled in for Javy Lopez, with Ross, it eases the pain.
