08:05 AM ET 05.03 | Houston, in some ways, forced their former coach's hand. The Rockets had decided they would choose Rick Adelman's successor even before the team and the coach had agreed to part ways. Adelman could have remained the Rockets' head coach, but was told that the Rockets had decided to hire his successor and put him on Adelman's coaching staff if he remained, according to two individuals with knowledge of the talks. Though Adelman and Rockets general manager Daryl Morey came together on several issues, Morey wanted Adelman to mentor a successor that Morey and Rockets owner Leslie Alexander would have chosen and put on Adelman's staff. Adelman was unwilling to make the changes necessary to his staff, arguing in favor of assistants.

They do that all the time in the IT world. They're always hiring the new guy and then they go and ask the guys they're about to dump to show him the ropes.
It's not a great plan really

Would really like to see him on the Lakers bench next season. I know that the consensus thought now is that Bryan Shaw will get the job but in my opinion the Lakers will need a veteran coach that will get players attention not a guy that is in favor of a certain few superstar players. You need a guy that will demand a certain effort from players not a guy that may be a little to friendly with players that may want a certain type of respect from the coach. If your listening Lakers management; hire Adelman.

I have been a Rockets fan since moving to Houston in 1982. I thought that Adelman and his staff, for the last two seasons especially, did as good a job as could have been done given the makeup of the team. The problem was not the coach; it was the general manager's inability to land that one quality big man that would have made them playoff competitive. Les Alexander's refusal to admit that he hired a pig in a poke where Morey is concerned and Morey's arogance in dealing with others who are better and more experienced in their jobs than he is in his, guarantees that I am a Grizzlies fan until Alexander sells the club and goes back to Miami. I am so tired of hearing Bill Worrell and Clyde Drexler whitewash stupidity game after game that it is time to do something else with my time.

Apparently Adelman is smarter than he looks. The only way anyone trains his replacement is he can't afford to be without a job.
