Royals may have suitors for Betemit

08:12 AM ET 05.03 | At some point, someone may need a third baseman. The Giants, Cardinals and Marlins have question marks at the hot corner now and other teams will presumably be looking for help at third this June, July and August. It's just a question of which teams are interested and which players are available. As executives look around the league for alternatives to Michael Young ($45M remaining on his contract) and Chone Figgins ($15.5M remaining on his contract), their eyes may settle on a player who has a .305/.381/.504 line since the beginning of the 2010 season and earns just $1M in 2011: Wilson Betemit of the Kansas City Royals. A former top prospect turned journeyman, the 29-year-old Betemit is already playing for his fifth MLB team.

The Cardinals is more an issue of staying healthy. But, couldn't hurt. Maybe they could trade them Franklin ;-)

I think you're stuck with Franklin

Might not be a bad pickup, even if we couldn't unload Frankie. Not sure what we have that the Royals would want though.

first ... this a news article about Betemit, but they put up a pic of Michael Young? ... and yes I know he's mentioned but come on ...

second ... it's a little early yet, but the Royals aren't playing half-bad ... they just might need to hold onto Betemit ...

While the Royals aren't playing half bad, they have a super prospect in Moustakas just itching to be brought up to The Show. If the Royals could snag a piece for Betemit that helps them either this year, or at least by next year, they should jump. Remember, it's 2012 that the Royals are playing for right now, and that's when the majority of their minor league talent is due up.

I agree 100%. Why would the Royals who are playing very good ball want to give up a player who is producing well and not costing them much?? Only in baseball would a article like this pop up, if it were football we would be talking about how great a deal he is and that a team would be stupid to give him up.

Sure they are playing for 2012 but with Moustakas waiting in the wings they should do everything possible to keep Wilson just in case something would happen to Moustakas. They have a farm system that is loaded with talent and a player that is not costing them much and is playing well. Why not keep him as security in case the youngster starts slow or gets hurt??

Moustakas is doing terrible in the minors right now. He's only hitting .227 with 1 double, 1 triple, and 4 homeruns. He's struck out 15 times in 88 at bats and has already had 7 fielding errors. The Royals would be foolish to move Betemit right now. However, if he can turn it around, you could see the Royals deal him, first baseman Kila Ka'aihue or possibly utility guy Mike Aviles for the right kind of prospects.

On a positive note, firstbase prospect Eric Hosmer is hitting .422 and a 1.049 OPS, with 5 doubles, 3 stolen bases, and 2 homers. He should be ready to come up by June 1. Left handed pitcher Mike Montgomery is 1-1 on the year with a 2.67 ERA in 27 innings of work. He might be ready in June as well.

Why weren't the Angles mentioned as a Team In Need of a 3B???

Izturis, when he's not hurt, hits (and Plays) like a Middle IF...

Not saying that Wilson here is the answer - but just saying...

Betemit. The name stills kinda sounds like a breath freshener.

There isn't a team ANYWHERE who would want Franklin!
