Wings may need Modano

08:28 AM ET 05.03 | Mike Babcock has been tinkering with guys to play the point on what, in Round 2, has been an ugly power play. Basically, they have a rotation of Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Niklas Kronwall and more Lidstrom. Coach Mike Babcock used defenseman Brad Stuart in the role Sunday, but he hardly has gotten to play with the puck at all since the Wings acquired him three years ago, and it's not a role that plays to Stuart's strengths. A better option sits on the sidelines in forward Mike Modano, whose ability to play the point was heralded by the Wings when they signed him last summer. He has been unable to crack the lineup in the playoffs, other than to substitute for an ailing Franzen in Game 4 of the first round, but Modano might get an opportunity Wednesday. Babcock was going to think about it, anyway.

anything to get a spark at this point, would be a good thing

The limp PP is a result of the problem, not the cause.

The problem is several of the Wings players are not playing as a unified team; they're not fully trusting eachother and trying to do too much individually.

Maybe Babcock will bring in Spotswood to show the team the true meaning of trust. ["Team America" reference]

Last thing the wings need is another AARP member. Right now they look old and slow compared to San Jose.

If the Wings need Modano then they've really got problems!

They're really in trouble if they need to rely on Modano.

What was supposed to be their weak point (Howard) is keeping them in these games, but it's the forwards not producing that's the problem. Babcock's got to try something, but the PP is just part of it.

Nice. I'm sure Modano would take a shot in the mouth for the team, haha.

Keep Modano off the ice, off camera, away from the team, away from the playoffs. There's a reason he isn't playing.

All they need is to get the lineup they have to play hard, top to bottom, for 60 minutes. They proved in the 3rd that they can play and dominate the Sharks, now they just have to sustain that kind of play. They've looked so flat they may have been given too much off-time between the 2 series. That being the issue, I don't think Modano is the guy to motivate them out of it,ha. Especially with Hudler playing hard and well enough.

Bringing in a second guy who can really only be used on the PP will tire out the guys who have to play regular shifts. They already have to keep Rafalski off the ice more and more.

Play the next game with the same lineup. Wings go down 3-0, put Modano in for his last NHL game in front of his hometown. Wings win, no add'l lineup changes needed.

He could give his big speech. The one about Peters and Anuses...

Wings always had trouble with the Sharks, who look a little stronger this year, except for Thorton, the jerk.

Howard always has a bad game and he's due after these good showings, that's what worrys me.

Sharks have been feeding off octopi for centuries.
Back even when Lidstrom was just a wee squid.

Given McClellan's past with the Wings, is it any surprise he goes and rebuilds San Jose into Detroit West? San Jose looks to me like they're made for one purpose - defeat Detroit. They match up about perfectly with the Wings, but look what LA did to them, and without Kopitar no less. No one's going to suggest LA is the better of them vs. the Wings.

That said, Babcock needs to decide if an old Modano is better than a damaged Franzen. Even the announcers noticed that Franzen is not able to skate as hard as usual, and hasn't even been hitting SJ much - not to mention not shooting at all (ok, once). If he's that hurt, I don't care how good he normally is, he shouldn't be playing.

I'd suggest moving Helm or Cleary (I'd say Draper, but I haven't heard his number called this series - did I miss an injury?) up to take Franzen's place and drop him down, or replace him with Modano, until he's at least 75%. Those guys have a lot of energy and Cleary's not averse to pounding on the other team.

I don't always agree with you but on this one I do. The Sharks look to be the better team so far. Playing bigger and faster for sure. The Wings are still in the thick of it though, they have a great team and it is the playoff caving Sharks they are playing. GO WINGS!!!

Just what they needed two more days off. The Euro twins better get going. If the Wings can take care of home ice, they'll both have jet lag on the way back.
