How the T-Wolves lose by winning lottery

08:06 AM ET 05.04 | While leaving a light on for Ricky Rubio, Minnesota could find itself in a tough spot by winning the draft lottery. Well done Timberwolves. You tanked the last few weeks of the season and were somehow able to end the season with a worse record than a team that went on a historic losing streak. You must be proud. Now for your reward you get the best chance at the top pick in this NBA draft. And while this may be a down draft, there's some good guys at the top of the board in point guard Kyrie Irving and forward Derrick Williams. Except, you don't really need them. ... Minnesota continues to insist that Rubio will be playing for them next season, but that still makes no sense for Rubio (you're going to come over into a lockout?). If Rubio stays, the Wolves could play Irving for a year then have to make a decision on Rubio and Irving.

The "Rubio" saga... damn near forgot about that.

This is NOT the NFL. If the Wolves win the draft, there will be ample opportunity to trade out of the 1st spot.

Cavs will get the top spot!

They got nothing after those two. Geez Minnesota is just historically a horribly run team. Are they seriously still talking about Rubio?

Is this an nba team?

May 4, 2011  10:04 AM ET

The Wolves are the most unlucky team in history when it comes to the draft lottery. If there are 3 solid prospects, they will pick 4th. No way this team gets the first pick.

Not sure how would having both Irving & Rubio be a bad thing. I suspect that there are a lot of NBA teams that would pay a fair price to add Irving to their team or you could roll into the next season with both on your roster. Rookie PGs don't generally play more than 20-25 minutes per game anyway, so you could play both of them and possibly increase trade value if they play well. And if they both play poorly, well, you are the Timberwolves and you already suck, so nothing is lost.

Pretty much can't trade out of the top few spots because there is not rookie salary scale in the NFL. I can't recall the last time a team traded a top pick in the NFL.
