Brewers GM: Reds to sign Cordero

The Reds appear poised to make the biggest free-agent signing in their history. The team and closer Francisco Cordero have agreed to a four-year, $46 million deal. The Reds wouldn't confirm that but for the first time admitted they are pursuing Cordero, the top closer on the free-agent market. But Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the Brewers had lost Cordero to Cincinnati.

YES!FINALLY!

November 24, 2007  08:51 AM ET

Fantastic news--it'd take only one or two decent signings like this plus marginally improved seasons from a handful of players to give the Reds a great chance in their crappy division.

November 24, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Now we are getting somewhere. Let's spend some money on pitching and go out and win the division.

November 24, 2007  09:29 AM ET

That is a great pick-up. While the Reds did overpay, the needed someone better than David Weathers in the worst way and he was by far the best option out there, so they locked him up. Good move.

*they*

their biggest free agent signing in histroy? wow what a declaration.

November 24, 2007  10:11 AM ET

Not sure this could be great news for the reds. Although big FA signings tend to burn this team.

All Right!!! This one's for u Joe Nuxall!!

Now if we can just keep Freel healthy.

November 24, 2007  10:43 AM ET

Hope springs eternal for another small market team. I suppose it will be the Reds and the Royals fighting it out for the World Series. Puleeze.......

November 24, 2007  10:43 AM ET

You all forget Dusty Baker is your manager now.....you'll see why he didn't make it with the Giants or Cubs.

November 24, 2007  10:44 AM ET

Great American Ballpark is a neat place, though.

November 24, 2007  11:02 AM ET

This sucks...(Brewer fan).

November 24, 2007  11:16 AM ET

The Brewers need to package Braun for Santana. The guy absolutely kills you at third base. He's the DH that the Twins need so desperately. Santana gives you the reliable ace that you seem to believe is Ben Sheets.

November 24, 2007  11:25 AM ET

I'm OK with this. A proven track record, Weathers to setup. Another guy in the starting rotation, we may be OK. As long as Dusty doesn't blow out every arm in the rotation and trade away what talent we do have in the minors for washed up vets...

November 24, 2007  11:33 AM ET

dusty and cordero... at least we are trying now

November 24, 2007  12:21 PM ET

dusty took the cubs further than anyone in recent history and did quicker than anyone else. i don't believe lou did that this year with the cubs. and didn'nt did the cubs have a huge payroll increase? oh yeah i think they did "a giants fan". now we just need another starting pitcher and some middle relievers. i'm glad we're not the cubs and stuck with average pitcher with a fat contract like zambrano. man if he played in our stadium instead of giving up like 7 runs every game he'd give up 10. im glad someone with money like chicago is blind and in puppy love with him.

November 24, 2007  12:21 PM ET

i don't know alot about cordero but hopefully his style fits our park

November 24, 2007  01:50 PM ET

Codero is not a great closer, but he is alot better than what we have had....nothing. By the way lets trade Grifey and Weathers for a bucket of BP balls.

November 24, 2007  02:50 PM ET

Cordero is a closer and he won't be in that position very often with the Reds. Dream on, Studz. $46 million for a reliever who finished 0-4 and is 26-27 lifetime. At 32 years old, he's not on the upswing, and the Reds need a lot more pitching, like 4 or 5 more big league pitchers. Like I said, hope springs eternal in the wintertime.
