Giants offering ace for Cabrera
It appears Giants general manager Brian Sabean is after Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera and is willing to offer a package that could include prized righthander Tim Lincecum. The Giants are in obvious need of a draw with Barry Bonds gone. They are looking for a centerpiece in their lineup, and the feeling is, why not build around a 24-year-old budding superstar?

To me, a Padres fan, I hope this goes down. But what a stupid stupid move by San Fran if it does go down.

They do this and I'm changing my nic. Sabean has lost his mind. I'd rather the Giants suck for a couple more years than give up this special talent. I would pay to watch Lincecum pitch, but not to see fatso Cabrera hit.
I guess Sabean is assuming he can sign Cabrera in two years when he becomes eligible for free agency; and the Marlins are not giving anyone a window to negotiate an extension. Stupid is as stupid does, and if Sabean does this, he will prove his stupidity and he can subtract one fan (and I won't be the only one, either) from his list.
This is a has-been GM in action. No wonder the Pads kick their butts year in and year out. We need someone like Towers, not Sabean.

Oh, I just looked at where this emanated from, the Boston Globe....again. What a dumb newspaper writer; he must be the same one who posted the stories on Lowell/Phillies and Crisp/White Sox.

More proof that Giants management has no faith in Giants fans showing up to the park without a marquee draw.
With the mortgage on that gorgeous ballpark, the Giants will never be able to really rebuild. They'll always shoot for "competitive" and hope for a break or two in the playoffs.

And that's why they don't need Cabrera. Just get line drive hitters who can play defense, run the bases, manufacture runs.
This is a gorgeous ballpark, as Zwitek says, the food is great and not overpriced like Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field or rickety Fenway, three places I've been and found lacking.
And, Z, the Giants can rebuild if they use the Twins model and develop position talent from within, not just pitching.

A Giants fan, it would also help if they had not overpaid for Zito. Maybe they could package him to the team that loses out on the Johann sweepstakes. Say something like Zito to N.Y. Mets for Millage and Pelfrey? or the Yankees for Cano, M Cabrera and I Stewart? or the Dodgers for Kemp, M Hendrickson and A LaRoche?

I like the Twins model, but at this point, I don't think Giants management will go that route. Some of them (Larry Baer) remembers those cold nights at Candlestick when 3,416 fans turned out during weekday night games.
I think the Giants would be successful using the A's system of getting on base by any means possible, and signing a few key free agents every few years. With PacBell not being a hitters park, they do need speed, but they need guys with plate discipline. If they could somehow get guys like Youklis from Boston.... watch out.
Iron- Zito was a definite overpay, but in a year or two, his contract will look mighty affordable to the Yanks/Red Sox/Angels and would be a very good trade piece. NOTE: I am unsure about the status of any no-trade clause in Zito's contract.

Dude, we cannot trade Lincecum. We finally get good pitching, we cant just trade our best pitchers off...
