Roenick adds 'gutless' to Marleau rips

08:25 AM ET 05.09 | It's not often that a former player moves to the broadcast booth and is so pointedly critical of another player -- let alone a onetime teammate. The San Jose Sharks' Game 5 loss allowed Jeremy Roenick to take another run at Patrick Marleau. Roenick, the former NHLer turned Versus analyst, called Marleau's performance in the Detroit Red Wings' comeback victory on Sunday night "gutless," and the rips kept coming. "All in all 19 players of San Jose Sharks came and grinded it out and played [a] very good game," Roenick added. Bitter much, JR? He played his final two seasons of his career with San Jose, the last on the Sharks' Presidents' Trophy-winning team of 2008-09. ... "Jeremy Roenick only cares about furthering his broadcasting career," Sharks' broadcaster Randy Hahn said on Twitter. "His Marleau take was WAY over the line. Many bridges were burned."

Kind of shocking that he came that hard with it. Marleau's been fairly invisible, but he JUST played with him as his captain, for crying out loud.
Great comeback last night. SJ is back on their heels now. Datsyuk & Lidstrom are refusing to let the Wings go down lightly - hopefully the rest of the team can pick their game up too. Good game from Helm last night too. Franzen will be a question mark for next game, unless 2 days' rest will get the job done.

This series seems to have 7 games written all over it...
good times.
I agree Marleau has been invisible this series, for his career his been much like Thornton - good to great regular season, and goes out with a whimper in the playoffs... but geez, Roenick, what's up with that?

Marleau played terribly last night. THe winner came from his give away, the tying goal came from him playing terribly defensively. He was terrible and deserved to get ripped last night. Isn't that what Roenick's job is to do anyway. Be an analyst.

That was an impressive comeback by the Wings last night in San Jose.

If i were Marleau i wouldn't take any stock in Roenick's hot air. The sharks broadcaster hit the nail on the head when it comes to Roenick. Not surprising to anyone, he's always seemed to throw off the perspective of the selfish player. But what will he say if the sharks win, will he weep again on national tv and tell them, "when i was busted up and the end of my career in san jose, i thought win it for the fans, for that little boy." Only person Roenick cares about is Roenick, he'd be a decent hockey analyst if he toned it down a bit. He will put on a show if San Jose wins, Philly ever wins, or phoenix. Anywho great hockey playoffs so far...my team is out by good luck to fans of the remaining teams. looking forward to the rest of the playoffs and the flyers season to kick back up next season.

I'll listen to JR before I'll listen to any other analyst on versus. He's blunt, opinionated and says what he thinks. Not only that he's right most of the time. You look at Marleau's performance last night and tell me he doesn't deserve every bit of criticism he gets. Maybe I'm (irked) because I can't stand the Wings, but Marleau looked pretty pathetic last night.

Apparently Marleau is not on JR's Christmas card list. I thought his comments were a bit much. If the guy played badly..........say so. Gutless? A little over the top IMO.

I always get a kick out of the Mike Milbury bashing that goes on regularly on these threads, mostly because Mike is a freakin genius compared to Roenick. Watching the games broadcast on VS is as painful as it gets and Roenick is a big part of that.
It's too bad that VS banished Milbury for the Bruins/Flyers series as it would have been nice to have someone smack the others down for the blatant man crush they had on Philly and James Van Reimsdyke (sp). If the announcers and analysts are gong to be so over the top biased towards one team, you might as well give us the local homers from Philly to do the broadcast. I have a feeling they would have done a better job.

Marleau plays terrible on too many nights to be seriously considered as one of the elite players in the NHL. But then .... he had a very good teacher. So, the chickens keep coming home to roost for the Sharks. No killer instinct.

Great comeback indeed. Great to see Holmstrom and Cleary show up to play. I also liked Bertuzzi's game the last two outings.

I don't see JR being a mainstay on VS
Get Matthew Barnaby in there. Him and Melrose were like a circus on ESPN but at least it was entertaining (and Melrose was the clown).

Roenick was right about Marleau... he was terrible last night... but i dont know if i would go with gutless... soft would be better... mind datysuk isnt the easiest player to defend but he could have been stronger on the puck in the first place. Roenick should have gone about it in a different way but thats not his style. What i want to know is if everyone watching could easily see the Marleau was laying an absolute egg of a game why does the coach have him playing against the wings top guys... bench him to wake his arse up.... though im going for the wings so just keep throwin him out there

Speaking for myself, I'd like to see Mike Milbury up against JR as JR has the ability of turning Mike into a perfect clown every time they're in the same room. Love it!

Not to whine, but just observing:
Many think Detroit outplayed San Jose in game 3. What might we be writing now if the series were 3-2 in favor of the Wheels?

I don't know about gutless, but Dats left him jock-less last night. Face it hockey is one of the games you have to have guts to play.

Dats pulled down Marleau's shorts on that giveaway that contributed to the winning goal.

I've said it earlier, but Datsyuk can be just absolutely unbelievable at times. If Detroit comes back to win this thing, and it's still a long shot to be sure, he should get a lot of the credit. Whatever happens he's been great.
