Twins to trade big-ticket pitcher

Publicly, at least, the Twins are saying they still hope to re-sign Johan Santana. Privately, according to at least one official from another major league team, the Twins have given indication they will trade Santana before the start of spring training, perhaps as soon as the winter meetings that will take place next month in Nashville. Santana is signed through only next season at a salary of $13.25 million. Any team that acquires him will do so knowing he will require a contract bigger than the one offered Barry Zito last offseason (seven years, $126 million). Some estimates place a Santana contract in the vicinity of $20-25 million annually for seven or eight years.

At that price, the Red Sox can have him. The Yankees should stick with their talented young pitchers.

Someone will be suckered; the Twins always find suckers. But, if they don't and Santana becomes a free agent, watch, some sucker will step up and pay this guy A-Rod money.

Pimpy, the GMs don't play with their own money either. Hey, it's only a job, right?

They are going to trade him. Either the Yankees or Red Sox will pay the price simply to keep the other team from getting the prize. The Yankees need a third team in the trade because they don't have the inexpensive position players to make the trade.

Yup, CardsFan, I'm finding I'm agreeing with you more and more, but I don't know about a third team. Who? And which players?

Isn't it funny, watching these egomaniacal teams try to screw each other up by cutting off their own noses, while lower budget Cardinals win the World Series?

hes so good. we will miss him in MN.. but like all the good players they must leave b/c of pohlad

im going to say for that type of caliber pitcher like johan the red sox should give up bucholz, coco, and 2 double AA players maybe holdzkolm and a decent position player, so for 2 major league ready players and some young talent, i think would push this deal through

If mediocre Barry Zito is worth that much, how much is a stud like Santana worth? Imagine him in the NL with that extra out at Pitcher? There aren't many sure things in professional sports, but I'd say that Johan Santana being a great free agent pickup, minus injury, would be a sure thing. I'd trade 2 of my top prospects for him. Imagine what his record would be if he were in offensive-deficient Minnesota?

Johan wants to hit as well (and he's capable of it). I say the Dodgers makes the most sense, plus Torre would love a stud pitcher.

Necessary22, why are you speculating about trades when you have absolutely no control or say over what teams do? Touche, fella.
