Howard left speechless by Howe visit

08:25 AM ET 05.11 | Jimmy Howard has seemingly had all the answers over the past week, but he was left scrambling after Detroit's Game 6 win. The first time a Red Wing seemed rattled all night, maybe all series, was in the Detroit dressing room after Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Howard was answering a question about how the Wings had come back and tied this second-round series, saying it had been business as usual and the guys had kept the same confident demeanor all along, when suddenly his voice trailed off. "Good to see you," Howard said. Gordie Howe, Mr. Hockey himself, had come to give his congratulations. They shook hands. Howard beamed, then returned to his interview. Or tried to. "So I ... I forgot the answer," Howard said.

and suddenly the Sharks look like the choke artists of seasons past...

congrats to the Wings, game 7 should be a great one.

Good game last night, Jimmy. Time to 1-up yourself Thursday. I'm thinking 7-0 ala 2002 Wings-Avs game 7.

Well, if the Sharks choke again (and who says they won't), game 7 might not turn out so great at all.

I think No Show Joe's nickname should go to Mr Gutless himself. 0 points in the series. I know Heatley and Thornton aren't doing much, but Marleau is completely useless. This guy is getting paid 7 mil a year too.

We're gonna have to come up with a new name for Marleau because Joe has more than earned his "No Show" moniker. Just look at last night's game. 22 minutes of ice time, 3 shots, zero points, -1 and 2 minutes in penalties. That from one one the largest and most talented players on the ice?

Let's call Marleau Mr. Griffin instead.

GORDIE...GORDIE...GORDIE

My favourite hockey player of all time!

How much can you expect when he's making that kind of minimum salary? Probably tired from working a second job.

That was one hell of a game last night...

Hell of a game!

Some regions are fortunate in having real athletic heros - not only with ability but with character. The Detroit area has Howe, Kaline, and Louis (among others). Howe's visit to the locker room did as much for the region as for the team.

Before Tuesday night's game, I gave the Feathered Tires one chance in four of winning the series. Now I am willing to call it even. And not only because of Howe's visit to the locker room.

Yup it was.

And you couldn't relax till it was for sure over if you were a Wings fan.

I have about as much confidence in Howard not letting in a bad killer goal (which he already had) as I do in Tony Romo not getting the yips and putting the ball on the ground.

But he made the big save off Setoguchi when it mattered.

They for sure had a better shot at forcing a Game 7 than Nashville did for sure.

And now they are tied up, I think they have a better shot of winning Game 7 than Chicago did against Vancouver.

What was the question again?

I remember that, the rivalry was still at boiling point, and after all the pushing around last night, it could be fight away in san jose

I was at the Olympia when Howe tied the Rockets record for most goals. We stood cheering for over 5 min. the papers said.

I guess there's no better time for San Jose to muster up some fight than a game 7 at home. I just don't think they have it in them to do so.

May 11, 2011  11:22 AM ET

San Jose seems more interested in cheap shots and after-the-whistle drama than they are in playing hockey.

I have seen the Wings get more teams off their game because the Wings are so good the other teams resorts to the cheap stuff. The Hawks in the '08 finals come to mind, and the last two Wings-Yotes series.

Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Keep the Sharkies rollin',
Keep 'em all a-rollin'
Red Wings!

May 11, 2011  11:45 AM ET

All of a sudden the Wings look really dangerous. If they win tomorrow, the Canucks are in big trouble. As things stand now, the Wings have the best chance of winning the Cup for the West. Boston or Tampa have a good chance agains the Sharks or Canucks, the Wings will be much tougher.

So, please, please, please, let's have a Bruins/Wings finals!!
