Signing Pujols the worst path for Cubs

08:12 AM ET 05.12 | Before Tuesday's game against the Cardinals, Jim Hendry and Albert Pujols exchanged a hug that got people talking. Yes, it's the same Albert Pujols who will be a free agent this offseason, poised to sign one of the richest contracts in major league history. Do the math and smile, Cubs fan. Then promptly pick up the nearest stapler and punch it into your chest to help snap you back to reality. Pujols is not going to be a Cubbie next year or in the foreseeable future. And thank goodness for that. It would be one of the worst baseball decisions for an organization that arguably had the market cornered on decisions gone bad over the last five years.

Hendry will probably give Soriano an contract extension instead.

All though I could see the Bronx **** signing him to a $300 million deal and making him a DH. This is the world of baseball after all.

If the baseball player's skills are declining, and the contract is far too expensive for an exorbinate length of time there's a very good chance that Jim Hendry was involved. Reference Bradley, Soriano, and Zambrano contracts. Don't be surprised if Hendry screws up again.

Because the Cubs would not surround him with any other talent and his numbers would plummet. Not to mention they would find a way to F it up!

The author of the original content offers no reason why its a bad move for the cubs. Albert Pujols is delusional about what his market value is. The Yankees and Red Sox are out of the race. They have first basemen. The next two teams who are usually big in free agency are the Mets and Dodgers. They are both out of the running with huge internal financial messes. So Pujols REaLISTIC market is the leagues 5, 6, and 7 th richest teams. And those teams are NOT paying pujols 300 million. There isnt really anyone in ARods realm. I believe the teams in the hunt for Pujols will be the Cardinals, Cubs, and Angels. And those teams will not go over 20 million a year. Pujols have to snap out of his delusion. What I would do if i was the Cardinals trying to keep their franchise player is offer him 20 mil / yr and then to make sure he stays home offer him an ownership stake when his playing career is over.

Pujols expectations are not out of synch with the market, but the market may be out of synch with Pujols.

Funny thing that most MLB teams are already investing in young 1st basemen and who needs a budget buster with declining skills on their roster? of course there is a sucker out there who will pay him what he wants ... Barry Bonds anyone? He set the Giants back 3-4 years because of his roster demands, petulance and all around bad karma and look at how they did a few years after removing his stench from the club house. I am not saying that Pujols is a bad influence, he's a pretty good guy, but his contract is gonna kill a team

I'm hoping the owners (all of them including NYY) finally wise up and just say no to the kind of cash Albert (read: his agent) will be looking for.
