McLellan doesn't believe in momentum

08:24 AM ET 05.12 | Considering where his team has been over the past week, this should come as little surprise. Todd McLellan doesn't believe in momentum in a series, which is a good thing for the Sharks considering that they have dropped three games in a row to Detroit. "What matters is what we put into the game" tonight, the San Jose coach said after the Sharks practiced Wednesday afternoon. Tonight at HP Pavilion, San Jose will try to avoid becoming the fourth team in NHL history to lose a series it led 3-0. At stake, besides a trip to the Western Conference finals against top-seeded Vancouver, is nothing less than the Sharks' reputation: The team is becoming increasingly known for its playoff flops, and this series could solidify the Sharks as the league's biggest disappointment.

Not surprising. His players don't believe in velocity either. You can tell watching them skate and shoot.

"The team is becoming increasingly known for its playoff flops"

No, the team IS known for playoff flops.

But I actually agree with his sentiment in this case. If momentum was so important, the Sharks would have won the 4th game after taking home the first 3.

If a properly motivated Sharks team comes out to play tonight, the Wings are in tough...REAL tough. But if the same team that showed up for most of Game 6 comes out, the Wings should be good to go. And if Game 7 against your biggest rival (it seems SJ consider the Wings their biggest rivals anyway) doesn't motivate you to play like an animal, well, nothing will, really.

Does he believe in magic?

Calling Dr. Heimlich, please report to the San Jose Sharks locker room this evening at 7:00pm.

Actually, I think McLellan has a point - but only part of one. "Momentum" is a combination of many things. Perhaps the most important of these contributing factors is self-confidence.

I think self-confidence is a factor in sport - including hockey. But it is made of mist and can be so fickle that it frequently is not a real factor in a contest or series.

So momentum is a factor, but not a very significant one.

LMAO - Also, heard he doesn't believe in acceleration or force.

However, he's a big fan of inertia and mass (see Heatley, Marleau, and Thornton.)

"I don't believe in momentum. Our team chokes. It's completely different."

I knocked on wood after that, making sure it doesn't bite me in the ass later.

I don't believe in Santa but every year I get a present from him.

Thing about the Sharks 3-0 lead was it wasn't a very convincing one. They hit Game 4 with not a lot of momentum aside from being up 3-0.

Detroit has played very well the last 3 games and does in fact have a lot of momentum. Certainly a lot more than SJ.

But should Howard manifest his inner Robooby and let in 1 or 2 softies early, the momentum swings immediately.
