08:13 AM ET 05.13 | Football programs are increasingly entering the territory of basketball scholarship offerings. John Allen was told twice last week Iowa was on the verge of offering his son Brian a football scholarship. John Allen didn't believe it either time. Brian Allen was after all only a high school freshman and had never played varsity football. But on Monday, John Allen called Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz as he was advised, and Ferentz confirmed that he would like to extend a scholarship offer to Brian Allen. "We're all kind of amazed by it," John Allen said. "I don't think it's sunk in yet. He's 15 years old. He can't drive a car yet, etc." Brian Allen, who plays on the offensive line, needed even more convincing when his dad told him the news.

And in other news, USC Head Coach Lame Kitten was in Our Lady of Mercy OB unit this morning to sign his latest recruit just hours after being delivered by C-section. The 27 pound newborn is expected to start as a true freshman in the class of 2020.

Talk about putting the horse before the cart. This is going to make it easier to make the case for an early signing period like basketball.Does this offer stand if the recruit has a career ending injury?Too many ifs recruiting this way!

He has never played varsity ball, why the offer?

Good question colonel. I don't think Iowa has a big problem losing in state recruits but it does not say where this kid is from.

Is it a good worm or bad worm that's the big question?

I don't think you should offer or should be able to talk to anyone under junior level HS.

They are trying to copy basketball. I agree it's buyer beware.

being an x-HS Coach I totally agree these college scouts will be knocking at the door during there freshman years , which is not right it hurts the development of the player and they can not handle there ego's when the scouts start telling them what they need to do and what they could be

The pressure on this boy will be tremendous!!!

Now that is a hell of a good comment, but quite a few college coaches have talked to and have been following recruits since "grade" school.

Stupidity!!...Then throw in the fact his older bro is at Michigan State playing Oline so they think he has got his genes..Not like he can sign anyways... If he blows up, he might not end up there anyways

Iowa has an ???in??? with Allen, a center/linebacker. The offensive line coach at Hinsdale Central is Mike Jones, a former starting offensive lineman with the Hawkeyes under Coach Kirk Ferentz who was a Hawkeye senior in 2006.
Also....
Oh yeah, young Allen is also a prolific wrestler. As a freshman, he was 39-8 and third in the state at 215 pounds in Illinois??? largest class.

Ferentz, I gather, holds wrestling in very high regard. His sons, Brian and James Ferentz, were successful wrestlers at Iowa City High before playing football at Iowa. Other Hawkeye footballers excelled in the sport as preps.

Offensive tackle Riley Reiff was a three-time state-champion at Parkston (S.D.) High. Former Iowa guard Julian Vandervelde was a state-tourney qualifier at Davenport Central. Incoming freshman Austin Blythe of Williamsburg, an offensive lineman, won three state-titles.
