09:05 AM ET 05.15 | It is believed a number of teams already have handshake agreements in place with undrafted free agents, and the big whigs on Park Avenue are not happy about it. In fact, the league is investigating the situation by questioning undrafted players. Fines could be forthcoming. The NFL expressly told teams they were not even allowed to contact players during the draft and tell them they would like to sign them as free agents.

"In fact, the league is investigating the situation by questioning undrafted players."

And if the kid simply says "No" then you have zero evidence to fine the team with. This is impossible to prevent.

Shocking, teams not playing by the rules...OMG what is this world coming to?

May 15, 2011  09:23 AM ET

Maybe Goodell should worry about getting the league up and running again.

I don't know about a handshake...but I would be willing to give them all a one finger salute...

Ya think???

Too many teams have too much riding on free agency, and too many team executives have a stake that is too small for them to care much if the league manages an absolute choke-hold on their employees or not, combine that with a vested interest in improving their own job performance, and you get this situation.

The players want to work. The people doing the day-to-day running of the teams want to get to work. The fans want everyone to shut up and get to work.

The only ones unhappy here are the owners. And the best thing to do is treat them like 2 year olds who won't lay down. Just ignore them and let them tire themselves out with the tantrums. They'll feel better in the morning.

If I was an undrafted player, and I wanted to remain an undrafted player, then I'd cooperate with the league. What does the league expect, anyway?

I have an idea how to settle the labor dispute. It is over money, why not take all the money Goodell fines everybody and use that to make up the difference? He seems more interested in finding ways to fine someone than getting a CBA done

The $500 Handshake in college football recruiting is a storied practice.
The NFL's version is probably somewhere around $5,000.

But Goodell can talk to players all he wants, thereby setting the example.

Teams could just tweet who they are interested in, they are not contacting the players, they are saying "Hey I like Fred Rouse for my team" and get it retweeted until Fred Rouse gets the tweet and tweets back "Yeah I'd like to play for NE".
