Mets begin paying Bonilla $30M over next 25 years

08:21 AM ET 05.16 | Bobby Bonilla is about to add insult to injury. The beleaguered Mets -- hammered by Bernie Madoff's fraud, free-agent flops and ballpark tumbleweeds -- will soon start forking over $1.2 million annually for 25 years to the paunchy, 48-year-old ex-slugger who hasn't picked up a bat in a decade. Bonilla, a notorious malcontent who bombed on and off the field for the not-so-Amazin's in the 1990s, will start collecting his nearly $30 million windfall on July 1. Thanks to a deferred deal he inked with the clueless club in 2000, he'll collect seven-figure checks through 2035. Not that Bobby Bo is short on dough. He pocketed some $50 million during his career, which included two stints in New York, and resides in an $8 million mansion in Greenwich, Conn.

Next time you pay $8 for a beer Mets fan, take comfort in knowning approximately $.10 of it is going to Mr. Bonilla's bank account.

Nobody held a gun to the Mets head to sign it. These deals are all over the place. Bruce Sutter has a real beauty. This is the kind of thing that could make Bud Selig get so upset that he might slap some more restrictions on the Dodgers.

I thought this brand of stupid business decision was reserved for the government. At least in this case by not frequenting the Mets ballpark, I have the option of not paying for this ignorance.

Saberhagen is getting a few hundred grand a year too.
I hate to say this, but it can['t all be blamed on Wilpon. I think that deal was made before they took control.

Ask Mario Lemieux how long-term deferred payments worked for him. At least he ended up with something out of it (re: the team!)

Maybe the Wilpon's can make a deal. "Here, Bobby, instead of the checks, take the whole team." On second thought, bad dea. The Met's aren't worth $30M.

I know everyone likes to kick sand at the Mets and Bonilla..but all the teams in all the sports do this...it helps the team spread the money over time so they can have more flexiablity with the present roster. You can argue if Bonilla is worth the money or a lot of the moves the Mets made..but this is not something that is unique to the Mets or Bonilla.

Makes me wonder if the Mets will trade Reyes so that they can pay Bonilla.
