07:49 AM ET 05.18 | The Buss family is circling coaching candidates, with many of the familiar options turning up. Yet for a couple of hours Tuesday night, the next Lakers coach was at their fingertips. They could have pushed a button on their remote control and brought him to life on their big screen, where he was sitting courtside at the Western Conference finals, bald and brainy and brash enough to pull it off. As a television commentator on the most important professional basketball games of the last five years, Jeff Van Gundy has become America's NBA coach. There can be no better pick to lead America's most celebrated NBA team.

Im not sure Laker fans will be ready for boring grind it out basketball.....

Jeff is a great coach and a brilliant basketball mind. The Lakers would only be so lucky. I hope it doesn't happen.

That won't be a problem if they win with that style but the won't. The reason is JVG will run the offense through the bigs and Kobe won't like the idea of not being the primary offensive guy so he will biquer like he did with Shaq and ultimately kill the team spirit. He's done it before and it aint like he's ready to cede that power even as he ages. He clearly doesn't have the mojo to dominate the league anymore so if he's not ready to defer he'll be a cancer for the Lakers they get rid of him. I think JVG will be a great coach for Lakers if Kobe will agree to take the reduced role he deserves because of his age and wear and the availability of big men that can get the job done inside...

That is true... Kobe's ancient news. He got swept out of the playoffs. Maybe he will accept a trade to the Wolves...

Nooooooooo not jvg. The man is madly in love with Miami and lebron and will just surrender every game vs them. I want adelmen or shaw, not jvg.

Are you ready for Hollywood, Bro?

May 18, 2011  09:14 AM ET

just get anybody. its not like he's going to be coaching anyway. kobe is the real lakers coach.

May 18, 2011  09:19 AM ET

did people listen to kobes exit interview. the offense is running through him. anyone thinking otherwise is foolish. why are people acting like kobe is done. he may not be 20 anymore...but the man is still effective. that is coming from someone who isnt even a kobe fan! people who you can expect to see gone from lakerland are..shannon brown...derek fisher..(if they find a valuable trade) then some version of a package with either bynum AND artest (d howard?) or artest and blake for another pg. they need a PG either way so that will be the focus. if they can get howard though they will no doubt settle for him and possibly try to acquire a veteran pg.

JVG is the best available coach in the market. Rick Adelman is an offensive genius but thrives on the bigs being great passers and also mid-range shooters. Lakers don't have that. JVG preaches more defense, and offense will go through the big, and spread the floor. Kobe will get a lighter load to carry offense.
JVG should be a no brainer for the lakers.

Maybe Kobe realizes it's not his time to be #1 any more.

Lakers can win another three in a row if he can bury his ego, accept his new role and play that way.
