Lidstrom key to keeping Wings intact

08:06 AM ET 05.18 | The Western Conference isn't likely getting much weaker, and the Red Wings can hope the same is true in Detroit. Much will depend on the return of defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. If Lidstrom were to retire after 19 seasons, the Red Wings would be a weaker team. But, if Lidstrom returns, the Red Wings have a core that'll be as good as any team. And it's because of that nucleus coach Mike Babcock believes Lidstrom, 41, will return. "If our team was no good, Nick wouldn't even consider coming back," Babcock said. "But having the kind of year he did, and the kind of playoff he did, and the kind of playoff our team had, it's given me confidence he'll be back." ... Some moves will be made, but likely minor. Ken Holland doesn't want to change the foundation of what should remain a talented and character-laden team.

Oh no, they need to make some major changes, even if Lidstrom returns. Tweaking won't cut it anymore.

Even Lidstrom can't play forever. The Wings should plan accordingly.

1 more year, then retire while still great.

I disagree.
Major changes aren't necessary - the core is still the core and doesn't need blowing up. Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Lidstrom, Kronwall and Helm are all stalwarts the Wings have moving forward (if Nik returns...which I also expect).
They need to firm up the d again. Ericsson took a step forward these playoffs but is still mistake prone. Salei wasn't a difference maker. Rafalski was a liability. They've got Hudler, Filppula and some other also-rans they can use to address that...and maybe even Rafalski if anyone will take him.

Not until we acquire him as a rental at the deadline next season, he will pull a Ray Bourque, except win a Cup the first year. The Wings will be long elimated from the playoffs, so they deal Lidstrom for Gustavsson (cause they obviously need a goalie for the future), and Lidstrom goes on to win the Cup with the Leafs. Luke Schenn wins the Conn, and Lidstrom and Schenn form an all-time great pairing.

Maybe, just maybe, Lidstrom can be the second Wing (and the second NHL player) to play in five different decades.

Just curious...but as the Wings fall from contender status how do you think that might play out for the players that continue to play for less money than what they may be worth on the open market elsewhere...?
The key for Lidstrom is for the Wings to trick him on his birthday and only put 35 candles on the cake.
Oh yeah....and Bourque is greater than Lidstrom....: )
