Winnipeg's team would stay in Southeast

08:04 AM ET 05.18 | If -- or when -- the Thrashers move to Winnipeg, they may not move from the Southwest Division. While the NHL is working on a couple of versions of a scheduling matrix if Winnipeg re-enters the league, a number of teams could be affected. So rather than rush in to making drastic changes, doing nothing for one season other than inserting Winnipeg into Atlanta's spot in the Southeast will be the short term approach to give the NHL and its owners ample time to consider all of its realignment options. Sources say NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is telling league owners nothing is going to change for one year, which confirms the theory above. ... It's a problem that can't be addressed until Atlanta's dance with Winnipeg has ended. But if the Thrashers move -- as bizarre as it may sound -- plopping Winnipeg in the Southeast, even for just one season, makes a lot of sense.

They move to a western-based division the following year, after Phoenix moves to Quebec City (and gets thrown into the east).

So Winnipeg would stay in the southeast and Dallas in the Pacific...

Perfect.

Yes, that makes so much sense. I don't even want to think about what they'll do with Quebec City if they get the Florida team....

I disagree, but then again I clearly do not possess the 'tools' to run the run league

The tool who does obviously has them in spades....

All this is still speculation. The Phx deal is being challenged by the Goldwater Institute, so who knows what'll happen there?

The league currently is unbalanced. This would be a great time to move some teams around. Assuming Atlanta goes to Winnipeg, I would put them in the Northwest. You would have Canadian rivalries with Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver which is good for hockey. Plus they would be close to Minnesota for another rivalry game with the Wild. I would then move Colorado into the Central where they could face St. Louis and Chicago. And then to keep the Southeast intact would move Nashville from the West to the East and put them there.

Detroit has wanted to be in the East and should be and if a logistical home in the NE could be worked out where they move there, Atlanta to Winnipeg and maybe Pittsburgh to the SE creating a rivalry between Crosby and Ovechkin could be cool. I know Pittsburgh won't want that especially losing the intrastrate rivalry with the Flyers but it could makes some sense, but I think if the NHL feels the Predators are staying in Nashville, then my first option works best.

But they aren't moving to Winnipeg so this story doesn't matter.

I don't believe in re-alignment so star players can play each more. That is temporary and a bushleague method of promoting the league in my opinion. I have a hard time thinking Pitt and Philly will be in different divisions - the decision will end up being more about geography than who plays for which teams.

It would seem that Winnipeg would be at a competitive disadvantage in the Southeast due to all the excessive traveling to play teams within their own division and conference.

Can't break up Pens/Flyers for short term rivalry between Sid and Ovie.

NHL keeps Montreal/Boston together even though it makes no sense geographically.

No, Quebec City will get the 'Yotes and play in the Pacific division.

I can see Boston and the Habs broken up.

Plus it reunites an old rivalry that was pretty big between the Wings and Leafs.

Exactly! No way to promote long-term rivalries.
