Will Philly find a way to land Bryzgalov?

08:26 AM ET 05.19 | Nearly two weeks into Philly's offseason, the Flyers remain in the news, thanks in large part to their goaltending issues. Speculation is growing over what the Flyers will do to address their goaltending situation next season, but Phoenix Coyotes pending free agent Ilya Bryzgalov is believed to be the Flyers' primary target. ... CSNPhilly.com cited a league source "intimately familiar with the Russian" who claimed Bryzgalov "would relish" the opportunity to play for the Flyers and the attention he'd get from their fans. The source also claimed the Flyers and Coyotes were involved in trade talks this season, some that included Jeff Carter, as the Coyotes searched for depth at center. But to make room for Bryzgalov the Flyers would need to clear around $5.5 million in cap space.

As proven as he is i just don't see tossing out a big free agent contract. If it backfires like lots of goalie deals they're really in a pickle.

He did NOTHING in the playoffs. The rest of his team showed up, but had no chance with the job he did in net, leading to the Wings sweep. Any goalie who performs like that in the playoffs 2 seasons in a row isn't worth that money.

Especially from a team looking for a playoff goalie.

Especially from a team that's tight enough to the Cap already.

Flyers need to go cheap and effective - get a Dwayne Roloson type old goalie. Nabokov, with his playoff troubles, is crazy affordable if they can pull of a trade with Snow and would be worth a risk at that rate. Emery could very well be available again. Roloson himself could be, too, if I remember his contract situation right. Cripes, even Giguere will be available, and he'll HAVE to be cheap after his 2 seasons in Toronot. Proven in the playoffs...

Nabakov is Bryz just older. Going cheap has been the Flyers motto for the last 2 decades and that has got them nowhere. An old John VanB, an older Burke, they tried Emery already. I'm not saying go after Bryz, but they need to get a true #1.

I just don't see a true no 1 out there. Not anyone you'd wanna throw a long term contract at. Play Leighton...sign Emery....and the other 6 goalies they have under contract. But at the end of the year you have to ride somebody win or lose. hard to perform looking over your shoulder every game. Maybe if healthy Emery is the answer.

They can't get him by signing him though, Nard. The Cap space they have won't allow them to keep this roster AND sign a $5mil/yr goalie. So signing Bryz may be all fine and dandy, but really just creates the need to make a bunch of trades for that Cap space.

Trading for a Quick or Schneider could work, but they likely have to give up Carter, at least, to do that.

Nabokov would cost a 2nd round pick. Nothing.
Emery is an FA, I think - and his go-round in Philly ended prematurely with his hip issues.

Either of these two (or an old FA like Roloson. Is Khabibulin FA yet?) let them keep their roster intact while addressing the need for a starter in the short-term. Giguere has already shown a willingness of sorts to mentor a young goalie too, so Bobs could benefit. Bryz, its been said, is not the most accomodating teammate to the competition for his job.

Thats ironic GC - when Philly got bounced i wondered if maybe Emery would be the answer. The Coyotes tender stops being great when the pay cheques stop-bad idea

Roly is available and he would be the guy Philly should go after. He is getting on but he has been a backup for most his carreer and has averaged less 50 games a year so his body should have a few more years left. He has done a nice job with teams that don't have the skill Philly has and would come cheap. Plus a nice mentor for Bobrovsky.

May 19, 2011  09:39 AM ET

Are they giving up on Bobky already? That would be stupid and I think it would come back to bite them in the future. Get a good goaltender coach, pick two goalies you already have under contract and work with them. All the goalies out there have some question marks, why not stick with the question marks you have?

I would let another team take the risk on Emery I'm not conviced he has changed his selfish ways. Bryzglov is asking for big money, let him collect in the K.

I'm not sure going after Schnieder or Quick is the answer they already have a young goalie who has accomplished more than those two. Roly is Free agent and Khabi has 2 years left.

Toskala.

I'd like to see them get either Bryz or, if possible Roloson - tho I doubt Tampa is going to want to lose him after these playoffs. An older goalie to mentor Bob is what they need and Bryz being a Russian is a good fit. Maybe it means an early playoff exit next year but if it helps Bob in his development, it may be worth it. They can afford to trade Carter, who doesn't show up in the playoffs anyway, to clear some cap. The Flyers have a lot of good young forwards and D men. Get a reliable goalie and they are set.

100% exactly my thought. Don't go cheap, trade a top guy if you need to for a #1 goalie. The Flyers are stacked enough at forward that if Carter leaves, they won't miss him as much as other team would. Plus they could get a nice package for Carter.

May 19, 2011  10:35 AM ET

I think the Flyers should go with Bobrovsky next year and use either Leighton or Boucher for a back up. My take on it is that it won't matter who they put between the pipes if they don't improve the defense.

I know here is some serious man love on these threads for Chris Pronger, but he sucks now. Was he good 10 years ago? Sure, but unless he's building a "way back machine" in his garage he's toast. Having big slow oafs like Coburn and O'Donnell isn't helping much either.

Let's face it Boston abused that Philly defense for 11 of the 13 periods they were on the ice and I don't think having a pylon with the # 20 on it would have made much of a difference. Coburn was invisible, especially after Johhny Boychuck croaked him, Sean O'Donnell makes a glacier look fast by comparison and the rest were far too easy to pin in their own end for very long stretches of play. Philly should go all out to improve their defense and stick with Bob & Boucher.

Here's hoping they don't listen to me.

A few days ago I had a dream Boucher was standing in front of his net with his helmet on top of his head and playing a practical joke on one of his teammates...while play was going on!! Is that a telling sign in the subconcious of my brain? And I'm not even a Flyers fan!

I'm more concerned about you dreaming of Boucher! :-)

Speaking of no-shows in the playoffs, how about Scott Hartnell? He put up a goose egg against the Bruins, no goals, no assists, zero shots on net (that one is amazing) and a -5. Yikes!
