Bettman keeping Coyotes out of spite?

08:33 AM ET 05.20 | With so much talk about the Thrashers moving in the blink of an eye, why is it that the NHL has fought so valiantly for the Coyotes? One person close to the situation has an interesting theory -- the overriding reason Bettman fights so hard for them is ego. Letting them move could be seen as victory for Jim Balsillie. When Balsillie made his play to buy the Coyotes and move them to Hamilton, Ont., his message was that hockey would never work in the desert, only in a tried-and-true hockey market. ... By giving up his fight to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix, Bettman could be seen as admitting Balsillie was right. So as long as the local politicians are willing to be relieved of $25 million per year, and the NHL owners are willing to let the Coyotes play on their tab, then Bettman will work hard to prevent any perception Balsillie was right.

another excellent piece by the Globe, with absolutely no bias whatsoever

Phoenix plays in the desert for one more year. end of story.
The Isles will be ready to move in 2 years. Dallas is having ownership problems. I am also suprised the Panthers have not been mentioned as a target.

Bettman doesn't want to lose his mid-winter "business trips" to the desert.

May 20, 2011  09:02 AM ET

So Bettman doesn't want the 'Yotes in either Winnipeg or "Spite". Where exactly is "Spite"? Is it close to "in deep"?

May 20, 2011  09:25 AM ET

This is an interesting theory that probably has some basis of fact. Holding the Coyotes in Phoenix defies all logic and reason so it has to be the Buttgoblin's ego that is holding them there. Why in the world did they extend his contract?

May 20, 2011  09:41 AM ET

This is beyond stupid. Atlanta hockey fans (and yes, we DO exist, contrary to popular belief!) are doing everything we can to keep our team, and this is about ego? We're being hung out to dry just so Buttgoblin can go "one-up" on Balsillie??!!

It is shocking to suggest that the little corporal would do anything without the purest intentions and the good of the game in mind.

There are a lot of teams that need to be relocated, but none more than Phoenix. They are second to last in attendance, averaging a little more than 12,000 a game, which is 70 percent of their building. They've made the playoffs the last two years, and haven't even been spending as much as they could. Many owners, not just Balsille, have tried to purchase the team, but can't because Glendale wants too much in return, or Goldwater is blocking the sales of bonds or something. So it'll be like Brett Favre all over again "Will they leave? Will they not leave?". I just think it's funny that Bettman/NHL spent 150 million on the team, have tried to prop it up the last 3 years with no buyers; all the while Balsille was willing to pay 250 million, and have the team relocated to Hamilton (would've cost another 100 million in his estimation) in under a year. Which would've meant the Coyotes would've been in Hamilton - this season....

Atlanta will end up in Winnpeg.
New York Islanders will get a new arena deal and still suck because they're run by an Asian and a goalie GM.
Florida will sweat it out in the south while former Blackhawks GM continues to rebuild.
Columbus will move to the Eastern Conference - after they're sold to Hartford.
Phoenix will go through this another year, except they'll suck because their players will abandon ship (bye Brzygalov), then eventually be sold to a group in Kansas City.

It is embarrassing to hockey and hockey fans to have this much instability in the league.

If hockey truly cannot catch on anywhere but canada and the northernmost states, then the decline will continue until sports like soccer surpass hockey in popularity.

nothing wrong with Futbol being popular, but Commissoner Garden Gnome needs to realise that this sport does not...DOES NOT belong down south.
The fact that this game is played on ice is testament to it's appeal in colder climes. (sorry if that was snarky, didn't mean it to be) and the only people that don't realise this are Bettman and his sychophatic minions.

I'm b-a-a-a-a-ck... ha,ha,ha... Nihon is now but a faint memory. Rating: B- Yow, The Bait One was absolutely priceless last night (with his bleakberret on the sly, that is - oops, make that, i-phony) - they had him ?receiving ?THE NEWS? while he was watching the (tell me the Nat Ho League isn't desperate to have the Bees in da final) most strangely called game almost ever, last night.

If the nhl does anything to prevent them calling the team The JETS, then True North/Thomson/Reuters should name them the Winnipeg Funhl Jatz.

Just wondering if they could legally prevent the Manitoba Jets (or Jetz, or the Winnipeg Jetz). I'm trying to work with the 'chets' Hank - just not inspiring me though.

It sounds like the Jets, Nordique and Scouts will be be revisiting the NHL over the coming years.

I saw the beady beast's eyes. It will not stop until all of Phoenix is destroyed, until Balsille has been broken! You have brought about a new Ragnarok down upon us all Evil Dwarf!
