10:26 AM ET 05.21 | Don't expect the Red Wings to be huge shoppers during free agency this summer. There just isn't a lot to like. League analysts are calling the unrestricted free-agent class one of the weakest in history. So, while other teams go after the upper-tier players available -- namely forwards Brad Richards (Dallas), Brooks Laich (Washington), Erik Cole (Carolina) and Ville Leino (Philadelphia) -- the Red Wings likely will wait it out until the bargain shopping begins.

Hey, don't they know that Modano could be had for a great bargain?

Well, then he'd know, I stand corrected. Modano too?

According to Argos......everybody. lol

Holland will sign James Wisniewski to a hometown discount deal to replace Ruslan Salei and a 3rd/4th line winger [like Jeff Tambellini] to replace Draper/Modano. The rest of the pie will go towards re-signing Lidstrom, Ericsson, Miller and Eaves.

I hope they have Helms sewed up tight, I would hate to see that player go anywhere.

I think he's signed for one more year at $1 mil.

Why is this news? This is what the Wings do every year.

They did go out of sync a bit when they signed Hossa but they were smart enough to give him just one year.

May 21, 2011  01:23 PM ET

why would they even need to? kinda stupid post.

Cause there's nothing else going on in the hockey world BF.

Oh wait....

Maybe there is.

This is news because of the recent history of the Detroit franchise and the number of Wingnuts in FanNation. But hey might bit for a FA if they can get him wholesale.

One of the reasons this is a lean year for superstar FA's is because teams (like Detroit and Chicago) have signed their superstars to multiyear contracts. Doesn't leave much on the market.

Unless Burke truly is a new GM.........then yes Modano too! We have had almost every other wounded, or past their prime player in the league at one point or another and it??s never done a lick of good! I like the youth movement in T.O, and they will have to get another top end forward, but it wont be a Savard or another concussed underachiever.................I hope!

Yeah. That would be like Grabner and the Nucks! Bad move.

The Wings will make a play, but not for any of the Unrestricted. There is a huge slew of players on D, on the restricted free agent market. Players that are on teams that are unwilling to spend big moneys, one that is about to be relocated. What better way to train young superstar dmen than letting them learn from Lidstrom for one more year?

Why is there a picture of Holland, when he didn't actually make any kind of statement on this subject?
