08:21 AM ET 05.23 | In a recent magazine article, Fred Wilpon comes off somewhat like George Steinbrenner. "Fred suffers," says Saul Katz, Wilpon's brother-in-law and the president of the team. "He really thinks they should go 162-0." ... Several times, Wilpon sounds less like a detached tycoon and more like Freddy from Brooklyn, venting his complaints to Steve Somers on WFAN after midnight. On Jose Reyes, the often-injured shortstop with an expiring contract: "He thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money. He's had everything wrong with him. He won't get it." On David Wright, the centerpiece third baseman: "A really good kid. A very good player. Not a superstar."

162 - 0, that's a nice trick. Maybe Fred was talking about his fantasy league team.

Unlikely. Morning Mongo.

Similar to a statement by Steve Spurrier while coaching at Florida...

... "My goal is for our offense to score a TD on every possession. I know it's not going to happen, but, that's the goal."

Analagous to wanting to score 100 on every exam, knowing that you won't answer every question correctly.

But, your goal is still to answer every question correctly.

Yea and prepare for the worst. Like boxing....everyone looks like the next Mike Tyson when hitting a heavy bag. Except they forget heavy bags dont hit back.

That said, I am formally requesting that you cease the art of inhaling and exhaling. Thank you so kindly.

I wonder if ownership examines their own performance? Maybe the Mets haven't pulled it all together but if management is making poor decisions all the while it certainly makes things a lot harder.

He is not wrong. Also, what is wrong with wanting to go 162-0? That is a good thing. I would image every fan base wants owners who want to win every game.

My issue with is is why now. My only guess is a ) they want to keep Reyes and are trying to set the expectation that he is not getting Crawford money because if he does they are out of the running. He is trying to keep the Mets in the bidding and b) He is trying to light a fire under Wright, who will not be traded this year.

How is this guy better than Frank McCourt, Bud Selig? Why haven't you ordered this guy to sell as well?

May 23, 2011  09:37 AM ET

More likely to go 0-162.

What a jerk (I couldn't actually say any of the words that fit better here). Why would anybody want to play for a guy that would say things like this about two of the best players on his team?

I'd say most MLB players don't want to play for the Mets or Dodgers.

Is that your attempt at humor...?

Wilpon on Carlos Beltran:

"We had some schmuck in New York who paid him based on that one series [his 2004 postseason with the Astros]. He???s sixty-five to seventy per cent of what he was."

As a Mets fan, all I can say to this report is..."UH-OH".

Phuuuuuuuck...

You're right about winning, that should be the goal with every team...

... to win every game.

Herm Edwards made a similar comment when coaching the Jets.

"My goal is to go 16-0, win every game. What do you expect me to say? That we'll lose game 5 or game 12, etc.?"

The goal is to approach every game to win.

Wilpon on Ike Davis and the Mets in general on April 20th:

"Good hitter. Crappy team...good hitter."

Apparently, boxing is not your forte...

... because, "everyone" does not "look like the next Mike Tyson... hitting a heavy bag".

Far from it.

Does the media even know what it means to "blast" someone, verbally? This, like most cases, does not qualify.

The same thing was said about those playing for Mr. Steinbrenner (and now his son) on the other side of town. If you get paid like they do it comes with the territory, (especially in the New York market)
